Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Its not disrespect it what he is. Hes a solid defender but cant finish at the basket. He's also really slow footed.

Kind of like fan assessments. One man's right to express his opinion is another man's assessment that some fans arrogantly over value their own analytical skills in public forums and have a terrible plus/minus rating on the rational fan matrix. All fair game I guess.

Couple of updates on some portal guys that people have been asking about after some conversations this evening.

Count Indiana St. transfer Tyreke Key as a guy that the Vols are interested in and will pursue.

Don't think that Tennessee--at least as of tonight--has any interest in Will Richard from Belmont, Appleby from UF or the Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn. Some names that people have been asking about. Again, things could change later, but that's the vibe I get tonight.

On the coaching front, the Elon job just came open and it wouldn't be a surprise to see associate head coach Justin Gainey, a guy with deep North Carolina ties who grew up in that area, get in the mix for that opening.

Would Tyreke Key play PG or off the ball more than likely? I know his 3pt % was down this year but still 32 % isnt awful. Considering he’s capable of putting up 44% in a season. Would love to get him though. He’s a Tennessee guy and he can score it.

Hard to believe that Tennessee would have more interest in Key than Llewellyn, strictly from a basketball standpoint. I wonder if there is something off the court giving them hesitation?

On that note, I can't believe anyone would have even asked about Tyree Appleby. 😳 That guy is a short fuse, one who already has a history with our team, and just isn't all that good, in general. No way we'd even have the slightest interest, there.

Losing Gainey wouldn't break my heart as I think we can upgrade, there. I'd hate to lose Aidoo if he chose to follow him, though stepping down to Elon would be a major hit to his ego, not to mention a poor career decision, so that isn't likely.

Agree, between the 2, I’d prefer Llewelyn, but I’d be happy with either.

I like Tyreke Key as an option, especially if you feel good about traction with 2023 recruits and landing some of the guards in that class you're looking at.

He was the primary ball handler and also the primary scorer, here he'd get the ability to do less of both when on the court. In his 4 year career he's never finished a season with more than 2 turnovers a game on average. Even though his 3 PT shooting dipped last season, he's a career 37.4% shooter from deep. Rebounds well and generates steals too. Shoots good from every where and his career 2PT % is over 50%. Also really good size at 6'3" and 200lbs+

Probably more of a plug and play option to take the pressure off ZZ/BJE to full fill KC's shoes and also would allow them to keep Santi as the off guard the majority of the time.

Not my personal first choice for a transfer PG...but I trust the staff.

Also are we not pursuing Isaiah West in state for the '23 class 4 star guy and is a top 100 national player.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but his 3pt percentage dropped almost ten points this year as teams began to focus on him. I’d also assume he has just one year of eligibility left.
He was also the focus the 2019-2020 season and shot 39% from 3 on almost 5 attempts a game…he also sat out this entire year with a shoulder injury fwiw.

I see Key as bringing depth at guard, an ability to play PG but that that probably wouldn’t be his primary position and I see them still looking to add an actual transfer PG even if they were to add Key. I think they like the 1 year piece and like what he would potentially bring to the table.

What about Keeshawn Barthelemy from Colorado? He played 2 seasons there and showed improvement, sub 1.5 TO a game guy, good size for a PG at 6'2", shot over 34% from 3 this past season, solid rebounding and assist numbers and was good for 11+ PPG.

Has 2 or 3 years of eligibility left.

Yeah, the mystery candidate still not in the portal right?

I'd actually take Devin Carter as well. That kid plays hard and with the mutual respect that Barnes and Martin have for one another he may fit right in with our culture. Top 100 kid, 6'4" combo guard and very productive while at SC with how low his minutes were.

Yes, I was just noting that in 20-21 he was given more defensive attention and he dropped to 30+\-.
I don’t think he was given anymore attention is my point, 2018-2019 he was conferences MIP, so everyone knew in 2019-2020 who he was. He averaged about 34mpg both of those final 2 years, took similar number of shots, I think his shot just was off, it happens. Maybe there was some shoulder issue that is what led to him missing this whole last year?

I don’t think you need another CG if you’re taking Key, again, they have the PG they want in mind and he’s better than any of those you just named.

Hopefully he is, since he seems to be the guy. But without knowing who he is I can't say that.

But assuming they have their PG, then Key as an off guard playing a similar role to Santi makes sense. If he's able to shoot closer to his two seasons before the shoulder issues then having another 38%+ shooter who can rebound and has good size would be a nice option for this team. Just has to be more consistent than Bailey or Powell proved to be in that role.

My friend’s son plays at Drake. I watched those games and a couple of others. It’s an anecdotal sample, but Drake took away his shooting in one game and put him off in another. You may be right that his shoulder problems were creeping in. He’s definitely a great natural shooter. I hope he comes back full strength from the injury.

No but I can, and I don’t think anyone in their right mind would think Barthelemy or Carter are even comparable.

I will say even if increased attention came as being “the guy” he won’t even be close to “the guy” at Tennessee, so if he can be a 40% shooter from deep on just open 3’s that would be more than enough. He’s also a good 2pt shooter for a guard and gets to the line about twice as much as anyone on our roster did this year, so that would also be a positive.

Well when the name is revealed we'll be able to discuss it.
My point simply was I wouldn’t really worry about tracking other PG names like you were because they have someone in mind…now if a high end guy comes available maybe they change their minds but right now they are content. VQ just said this morning they aren’t pursuing Llewellyn at all, same for Clark.

Interesting we're interested in Key again. Pretty sure I remember his name surfacing on here last year, but that obviously didn't pan out.

Been a fish we've been trying to land for a year it seems lol
