Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Yes, regardless, I think we will have a good team next year, but with Phillips, Murray and a good PG, we truly would have the deepest team we've ever had. That is, assuming everyone comes back as expected.

A lot riding on the next few days.

I don’t think we’ll know about Collins for quite some time, due to him testing the waters. So, that part of the equation won’t be solved till the early part of Summer.

Collins, Murray, and Phillips all add dynamic assets to this team. Collins passing is otherworldly, would open up so many good looks. Murray can get to the basket and give us another extremely versatile defender to pair with JJJ when switching. Phillips would give us a guy who can score at all 3 levels as well as an extremely lengthy wing, which I'm not sure I've ever really seen in my years as a fan.

Well I was one of the few saying he damn well may be All-SEC and wasn’t going anywhere from the lineup and I too think Plav won’t be starting 🤷🏻‍♂️
Like Mookie said it's not under appreciation it's we have 2 guys with much higher ceilings ahead of him. Aidoo and BHH are a ton more athletic than he is. And I didn't put him in the 2 deep because I don't see him playing a lot, but I could very well see him get 8 or so minutes a game. He's a good teammate and an enforcer for sure, but he's just not as athletically gifted as others.
I can’t predict the future and don’t know how many of our current targets will land with us but none currently being mentioned are +>6’-10”. This means we’re looking to fill the 5 spot with our returning roster whenever we play a traditional lineup with a big body in the middle. If CRB decides to play a small ball lineup 75% of the time then Aidoo and UP are going to struggle for minutes but I predict we will play small ball at a lower clip. Right now, UP has demonstrated he’s the only one who will bang with an aggressive big like Cardwell of Auburn. UP improved with his increased minutes and I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling. If Aidoo and BHH make such great strides that UP can’t get on the floor then we’re going to have a great season, but I think it’s going to take huge strides from them to take all those minutes. I’m not predicting all SEC for UP but I think he’s shown the drive to continue to improve. Of course, JMO.

I could be wrong, because we all know Rick values experience and a true 2-post system rather than just complete small ball, but IF we bring in Murray, Collins, and Phillips, it feels like a post-player is likely going to be an odd man out at that point and you might see Uros lose some PT. I guess that all depends on how Aidoo and BHH develop, but their ceilings are far higher than Uros and with the return of ORN, someone with major minutes (not just spot minutes like Powell) is going to have to sit.

I could see Rick just going as much small ball as possible and rotating guards often and keep JJJ and ON at the 4/5. Hell you might even see some truly SMALL lineups like:

Collins
ZZ
Vescovi
Phillips
JJJ

That lineup would be FUN.
I don’t think there would be much need for the small ball three guard lineup unless we are being pressed. The only reason we used that so much was because none of our backup wings brought enough to the table for playing time. Further, Murray might be a better three option than Vescovi.

I think simply having the enforcer role means he will get minutes in most games, but I agree, as long as UP continues to develop, if Aidoo or BHH take away a bunch of his minutes that will bode very well for our team.

Bringing in Philips, Murray, and Collins takes away any incentive to crowd Vescovi and post up ZZ. It may be in teams best interest to have ZZ and SV out there because we can bring in bigger, more versatile defenders, who can attack the rim.

Not really. Aidoo and BHH are both potential first round draft picks. If they play as they should Uros isnt seeing much time on the court.

Not to mention ON at 6'8" and Phillips (if we land him) at 6'8" could also play that 5 spot. Uros is an old school throwback big...late 90s early 2000s he'd be a lottery pick just on his size alone.

Today's game ya need more than just pure size and strength though.

You say that like we've not ran JJJ and Pons at the 5 before (with success)

I'm just saying if we were playing small ball ON/Phillips both could be seen at the 5 so JJJ can be in at the 4.
I could see it.
Transfer/ZZ/Ves/JJJ/Phillips. That lineup would probably struggle to rebound would be my main concern.

Would they though? JJJ, ON, Santi were 3 of our top 4 rebounders this past season and Fulky the 4th.

I guess until Phillips plays we won't know what he is capable of.

Phillips currently weighs 200. If you’re going to play the 5 short, you have to have mass.

Maybe. I don't think 6'8" is short to be playing the 5 in the SEC though. Eason is 6'8", Oscar is 6'9", Coleman is 6'7" granted Eason was mostly a 3/4 type guy for LSU.

I just think ya got a top 15 talent and if he's good enough to be 1 & done you do what you need to do to get him on the court. Even if that's running him at the 5 during your small ball lineup, we did it with Fulky who is only 6'9" and doesn't have a ton of mass.

Anything is possible. The kid thrives in space. Drives and shoots well from both sides, and can handle guard/forward on switches. Kind of wasted at the 5. He’s plays a lot like De Andre Hunter than he does any of the guys listed. I see him getting meaningful minutes if he comes.

Any talk of these guys being first round picks is total speculation at this time. Neither of these guys have shown anything their first season considered first round talent. Again, I can’t read the future so maybe they will eventually. Grant showed way way more as a freshman than either of these guys. It will be a minor miracle if 2 guys start next season looking like first rounders, but we can hope. Still a huge stretch to think it’s gonna happen

You're just assuming too much. If we're playing small ball (like we did often this season) and it's him or ON at the 5 we likely won't be dumping it down low for Shaq/Grant type back down scoring.

I'm not saying he'd be the permanent 5 instead of Uros, BHH, or Aidoo. Just saying that he could run it when we want to go small with 3 guards and JJJ at the 4.

The NBA drafts off intangibles. BHH just shows hes a competent player hes a first round pick with his athleticism at his size. And Aidoo just needs to stay healthy, he has a nice mid range jumper and is a good rim protector as long as teams arent worried about his knees he will be a late first rounder.

I don’t recall us ever playing JJJ at the 5, but if we did, he’s still 220+ and an elite defender.

Pons has a 40 inch vert and built like a tank. One of the best shot blockers to ever come through the SEC.

Neither are comparable.
