FOXNews.com - Obama: America a Superpower 'Whether We Like It or Not'

Being a superpower ain't all that, at least according to President Obama.
In a little-noticed remark at the close of the two-day nuclear security summit in Washington, D.C., this week, President Obama suggested the United States is somehow burdened by its military might -- a comment that drew a stern rebuke from his former rival in the presidential campaign.
Obama was responding to a question Tuesday about how the summit would play into peace-making efforts in the Middle East when he addressed the downsides of -- by virtue of America's world stature -- being obligated to intervene in international conflicts.
"It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them," Obama said. "And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure."
The remark got little attention in mainstream coverage of the summit, but was picked up on several conservative blogs, which panned the president for suggesting Americans had grown weary of superpower status.

Thoughts other than Fox News having the courage to run this story?

Even democrats are angry.....

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., slammed the leader of the free world Thursday, calling the remark a "direct contradiction to everything America believes in."
"That's one of the more incredible statements I've ever heard a president of the United States make in modern times," McCain, a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, told Fox News. "We are the dominant superpower, and we're the greatest force for good in the history of this country, and I thank God every day that we are a dominant superpower."

What, exactly, are you trying to say here, OE?

That the US should be proud of it's stature and volunteering to be the world's police? Trust me... people in the US should not and indeed most people across the world do not want that.

I didn't read the article, so I'm not sure what he meant by 'or not.'
That being said, if he doesn't want the US to be a super power, then he isn't the man for this job.

It seems funny. When other countries say they're the best, it's pride. When America does it, it's arrogance.

Under no circumstance should the US be chest-beating about the fact that we're number 1 militarily. The rest of the world, quite literally, hates this attitude and so do I.

If someone requests aid, we should comply as it's a duty I think we should bear. Like Obama stated... it comes with the territory. We should not, however, see our military as a "Force for good". It's a force for territorial defense... not resolving cultural squabbles we have no part in.

Who in the world believes the military is a force for good?

Are you referring to the Navy Recruitment slogan?

well, historically when people when things go south, and something needs to be done, it has been the US that has stepped in and fixed the problem. WWII would never have made it to WW status if the US didnt have the isolationist policy that it had prior to the war

We shouldn't be world police. That doesn't mean I don't take pride in the fact that our military is exceptional.

As much as my national pride, coughs, hates to admit it........ Russia had a huge role with the victory in Europe.

I think we give ourselves a little too much credit for Europe.

Possibly. It's probably good we stepped in to keep Russia from running through the entire country. England can thank us.

This quote:

a "direct contradiction to everything America believes in."

Followed by:

"We are the dominant superpower, and we're the greatest force for good in the history of this country, and I thank God every day that we are a dominant superpower."

When put against this:

"It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them," Obama said. "And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure."

Leads me to think that McCain wants to chest-beat about the role of the US in world affairs. Honestly... Obama nailed it.

I won't argue this at all.............. me thinks our revisionists history gives us way too much credit though.

Being proud of and being arrogant about are two totally different things.

Honestly, some of the comments I received by pro-military people when I was in my Blues embarrassed me a little. Nationalism is a very thin line and more often than not... dangerous to traverse.
