That's racist!

Oh lord… what’s the name of this thread lol?

These women who are well over six feet and strong and athletic and determined and all of these other sorts of things, I think are scary to lots of men and I think they would be scary to lots of people

People run wild with these theories, but the root of it is they're trying to explain why some men hate the WNBA so much? It's one thing to not care about it, but go look at the comments on any social media post and there are dudes just hating on WNBA players talking about how much they suck. They have very strong opinions that they don't deserve more money when they have a minuscule fraction of the information needed to make that judgement. It's the weirdest ****ing phenomenon and people, like the person behind this quote, are confused and trying to explain it. A lot of these are the same guys who would consider themselves protectors of women and chivalrous.

I think part of it maybe a little jealousy that they can make a living playing sports when the guy thinks he's better than them. I think a big part of it may be men are threatened by the women's independence movement, and the WNBA is a symbol of that. I think a part of it is the perception that the WNBA is woke. I think part of it is just people are douche bags and like to **** on stuff. Probably some other explanations. I don't think anybody is scared of them, tho.

I mostly just found the quote humorous, given the legacy stereotype, and the title of this thread.

But yes, I’d say it’s most of those things, in partial part are true.

There probably is some jealousy, especially if they perceive themselves as more skilled than “those girls”.
There probably is pushback based on nothing more than the heightened level of social justice ideology present in the WNBA.
There probably is an element that just want to crap on something, and the WNBA is an easy target.
I don’t know that I buy the women’s independence angle as significant, but concede that it could be for some.

I don't understand how you come to this conclusion since the WNBA is dependent on the NBA for survival.

Wasn't that like 50 years ago?

WNBA is women playing a way worse version of men's basketball. I'm not opposed to its existence but it is terrible to watch. Softball scales much better for women than basketball especially for spectators. Gymnastics is the ultimate women's sport because the women's version is way more impressive than the men's. Tennis, swimming, and diving also all scale better for women than basketball.

I think it scales fine. I’d rather watch Clark play than any softball player

TBH, pretty clever.

But is it, though? Seattle Storm were bought for $10m in 2008ish and now the market has set their value at $150m and we're supposed to believe this is not a profit-making enterprise? The new expansion franchises are selling for I think I saw $50m. What rich dude is thinking it's a good idea to sink $50m into a loser? They see the books. You don't. You think it's a joke. They're putting up money that says otherwise.

I have nothing against the WNBA, I'm not a fan and haven't watched 5 min of one of their games but I wish the league all the best. I have made fun of people who have screeched about the difference in pay between NBA and WNBA players, they just don't understand the reality between the two leagues. I don't watch NBA games very much either.

You mean did it end 50 years ago? No, bro. It's been an ongoing thing.
I guess. Whenever anyone talks about the women's movement it's usually the 70's stuff. It may be the major factor in the culmination on why so many men and women are so miserable now, eluding to the thread you started. I have a lot to say in that thread (You're excited I know), but it's a lot and it's just a college message board. Carry on.

Are women miserable now? Why do you say this? Just an opinion? I know suicide is way down among women since 1970. It's the men who seem to be unhappy about women's independence.

Judging by that graph, men have always had a much higher suicide rate compared to women. Women's independence has never been a factor in it.

The women's rate is a complete non-factor in this question.

The graphic shows the rate among men has increased, correlating with the increasing independence of women
