The 138th Open Championship

That was a terrible shot, but it is unconscionable that there wasn't a marshall standing near where that ball came down.

I hate the way the wheels came off for Watson in such an embarrassing fashion, but I'm glad to see Stewart Cink get a major.

Seconded. As good of a guy as Watson is, and as good of a story as he gave us this week, there was something in the back of my mind that kept screaming that he had no business winning this. I hated to see him fall apart over the last 4.5 holes, but in the end things worked out like they were supposed to, with one of the "Best Players Never to Win a Major" scratched off the list.

Rick Reilly has no business being on TV.

Or in print.

Whew, that playoff was tough to watch. Still a heck of a week by the old dude.

Also glad to see I'm not the only person who finds Rick Reilly incredibly annoying.

that approach shot on 18 in regulation for watson did him in..
hated it that it rolled through the green

I hate that "Best player Never to Win a Major" thing. It always makes me think that somewhere there's a padded room with guys like Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald, and Adam Scott banging their heads on the floor.

Cink is a good guy. i was really pulling for Watson, but if he had to lose to anybody, it might as well have been to a good guy. Westwood has to be killing himself right now.

first Kenny Perry and now Tom Watson. sure makes for a depressing day of watching golf.

this is a fairly knowledgable crowd, but for those who don't know much about Tom Watson, pick up Caddy For Life by John Feinstein. it's an easy read.

Not my favorite grouping, either. In this case, it was shorthand for "A guy who has the game to win one of the biggest tournaments, even though he hasn't yet, who isn't that much of a surprise to break through, and who, even if he never wins another, won't be regarded by history as a fluke."

I agree. I like the way Tirico calls just about everything.

my only problem with Tirico is the Tirico and Van Pelt show. Van Pelt is one of the few guys I like seeing on SC nowadays, but when they get together for their radio show, nothing gets accomplished. They talk and laugh and laugh and talk and two hours later they haven't really said anything.
