The 2008 Carolina Panthers thread

I'm not sure if he is back from IR yet.

I didn't get into football untill the 2003 Super Bowl which was when I fell in love with the Panthers because I was rooting against the Patriots. I've have never liked the Seahawks and never will. Watching them get "cheated" out of the superbowl was the best thing ever.

Aint that the truth. Steve Smith made be a beast but the little guy can't do everything by himself. Hopefully the pressure is going to be taken off of him since we got Mussan Muhammad back.

Now about the draft. I was happy about some the picks we made. Especially Otah, man were those eagles fans pissed or what! The only thing I complained about was the fact we didn't draft a QB. I worry about Delhomme Sometimes. Before his injury last year he has been a inconsistent. I thought David Carr was going to be our saving grace but we all know that the dude just sucks ass. Grampa Vinny is just too damn old. Matt Moore. Meh I've heard some great things about him, but I haven't seen him play yet.

Also my boy Julius Peppers should rebound from that slump he had last season.

Jake's stats before he went down w/injury last year:
55/86 for a 64% completion rate
208.7 yards passing per game
8 tds/1 int 8:1....that's pretty darn good, and i'd take that all day long.
111.9 qb rating.

Nick Hayden from Wisconsin is a very good DT. I believe you'll be pleasantly suprised by him.
that's the word i get from reading a little about him. he'll at least add some depth. the big issue now is a)can/will Pep come back from a sorry 07, and b)will charles johnson turn in to a serviceable DE to go along with Pep?

 The Detroit Lions: Not applicable to any relevant conversation about the NFL.

As far as the Panthers go, I figured a backup QB would have been a good draft choice. Delhomme, while I wouldn't sing his praises in any way, is decent enough a QB to build a contending team with.
yep. especially considering the style they want to play. it doesn't have to have a qb that has to win games for you. it has to have a qb that doesn't lose them.

when jake and hte rest of the offense is healthy, they can do what htey are expected to do in this system. he'd fail miserably with the pats or colts etc....

the draft though told me two things: Matt moore did enough last year to quell any fears about qb depth. and Jake's prognosis must be pretty darn good.

I wonder if Panthers fans will use the injury excuse again this year if the Panthers miss the playoffs.

when your starting qb goes down for the year and your back up is david carr, it's not an excuse. it's reality.

the Chiefs made the playoffs in '06 with Damon frikin Huard at QB. I don't see how David Carr or Vinny Testaverde made your defense suck balls.

they didn't, nor did i imply that they did. my point was the quarter back was awful. and that's not in dispute.

no one thought the D would be as bad as they were last year. but you can't sit there and say that going from Jake Delhomme, who was on track to have a career year, to david carr and not say there was a drop off?

the defense didn't help. but the panthers were simply not capable of scoring enough points to win games. with Jake playing like he played at the beginning of the year for the whole year, they maybe get in as a wild card.

they didn't have the defensive production last year though to win the division or make a deep run in the playoffs.

And it's not like we didn't know our Defense sucked because it did. Carr had some injuries through out the season also. Can't do much on offence when Gramps can only throw the ball 15 yards.

Well panther tickets went on sale on Saturday. Did anyone buy any? Some games are still available which is understandable considering last years home game season...I bought tickets to the Monday night game, not sure that I can go yet, but since I have never had the chance to go to a Mon. Night game, I wanted the chance to experience it! Hopefully I can go, all depends on my class schedule this semester.:crossfingers:

nothing like august two-a-days to get the football juices flowing. Steve Smith is already in midseason form after giving a teammate a shiner. Must be good to be a Panthers fan.

In '05 when he had the fight with Anthony Bright, Smith had his best year of his career catching 103 passes for 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was 1st team All-Pro that year so I think it's safe to say he will equal that production this year.

yeah.. i can definitely the correlation between brawling with teammates and on the field production. It's a no brainer.

Well I don't know the whole story on the brawl, etc., but Smith was suspended for the first two regular season games- at San Diego and home against the Bears.

We would have 1-1 in those games anyway, and the Bears are still beatable without SS but there are two ways to think about this and I'm not sure which one to pick:

Kudos to Fox for being a disciplinarian on his best player in the year in which he has to win to save his job?

or

Since the fight was in full sight of the media and SS has a history of this, Fox was forced to go over the top in punishment?

And like there aren't problems on any other team? :eek:k:

I don't think he was forced to go over the top, maybe a little under, but I can't wait to see the first game to hear the media say oh they aren't playing their best because Smith is out or Smith would have caught that ball if he were in.

stupid move on Smith's part. broke Ken Lucas's nose. could maybe understand a scuffle on the field after a play.....but on the sidelines, after the play, helmets off......no resaon for it.

i think Fox and Co. were left with very little choice on what to do with this one.

i'm a fan of Steve Smith. and for the last couple of years, he's gone basically incident free.......many thought he'd turned a corner, but obviously not.

lose those 1st two games and i just can't help but blame him.

Well apparently he got a one game suspension in 2002 so obviously you have to go 2 games the second time around.

Hopefully the guys can rally around this.

listening to the radio the past day or two, and listening to Brinson Buckner, and there appears to be a lot more history with Steve Smith and his antics than most of us will ever know......he sounded 'angry' on the radio yesterday.......

now there's some rumblings of possibly trading Smith......

i hope all the stuff that they did in front of the media yesterday as far as apologies and by gones be by gones, turns out for the good.......cause if this locker room has issues, this season is over before it gets started.

Yeah it doesn't seem like the locker room has been very cohesive since 2006.

Sounds like the younger guys who needed to complete the transition from star to leader haven't gotten there yet...Smith and Pep come to mind.

Well, not having Delhomme last year didn't help from a leadership standpoint, and from what i'm hearing, Beason has turned in to quite the leader for this defense.

just hope for the best and that both Lucas and Smith were sincere in what the said yesterday.

I saw Yaskinsas say that about Beason. We will see about that. He's still young so that may hold him back, but if he can break out and lead by example then I'm sure he'll be listened to if he has something to say.

I'm just hoping we can get some sort of pass rush so that we won't leave our average secondary out to dry.

I'd say the Green Bay Packers' problems are worse right now; as are the Rams'.
