As a viewer not a player, it makes no sense a man with that much talent can't find a consistently playable swing with driver.

With him it doesn't have to be way out there, just in the right place...

way out there is what he turned the game into. Kill it and gouge it out when crooked. If he scaled back to hit fairways, he would lose his iron advantage because he would be going at greens with longer irons than his adversaries. That would spell mediocrity for him.

With the heat he's creating in that swing, the margin for error at the bottom is miniscule. That's why Kenny Perry and Greg Norman are so amazing to me.

length could be the issue, but while his swing isn't elegant anymore, he's shown that the shots and the absurd distance is there with this swing. He lost Quail Hollow because he didn't make his putts. I'm pretty sure you've posted something along the lines of everything for Tiger comes down to his putting. When he's on, he's lights out, when he's not, it's anyone's tournament to take.

I absolutely respect your opinion. I guess he has to be able to rip it out there.

But he goes out sunday playing only 2 drivers(lost 'em), and is the only guy to drive green(3wood) on the drivable 4(14?)....and still is right on the lead...

don't get me wrong, he has the ability to win with long irons and 3 woods. Hell, he won a British Open with them. However, he takes a step closer to the field by shelving the driver. Also takes a huge prestige hit. Don't think the competitor in Tiger could take the admission of defeat that going driverless would be.

I think Tiger has already lost the incredible length advantage he once held. I would consider him to have top 30 length not top 1 or 2 like he once had. In all honesty, I put a lot of the blame on the ball. The thing is mush.

He can still move it out there with all of them, when he wants. I just don't think he goes at it that way any more.

Good point, but I get the feeling that if Tiger thought he would win by teeing off with a 4-iron, he would. I'm guessing he doesn't hit driver very often at Bethpage, despite its length.

Did anyone else hear the shaft comments Tiger made after last week? It's a combination of hookin haney and the bigger driver, the sum of these has let to a deficit greater than the individual parts.

On a side note, the Players is a fun tourney to hang out at...and it's fairly reasonable. The course is set up for the fan, with many places that view two or three holes at once.

I went to practice round on monday... We were walking from #3 to the driving range to see Rory and Ames shanks a shot and hits my brother-in-law in the back... he came over to us asked how he was and signed the ball and gave it to him... i'm just glad it didnt' hit me... Saw him this morning and it's still looks pretty bad...

Did anyone else hear Brandel Chamblee going off on #17 last night? He is not a fan of the hole.

I didn't hear it last night, but have heard it from many in the past. I don't like the hole in the least, but it does put a premium on thinking and distance control and makes for high drama, even on Friday. I understand why good golfers hate the gimmicky nature, but they all need to get over that and remember their checks are paid by TV audiences.

He said it was good entertainment, but so is a bull fight. If I were in the pro's shoes, I would hate the hole, but I am not and I love it. They are the best in the world, its fun to watch them sweat. Give them the same hole minus the water and it plays 1/2 a shot under par.

The crowd around 17 is amazing, It's a spectacular atmosphere. To me it's the same thing as the par three at the adt where there are skyboxes all around.
