Anything special needed to ride in the snow? Unless it's really dry powered would think it's 10x more difficult to pedal

Wider tires and low gearing helps a lot. Other than that, just patience and some handling skill.

I used to have a fat bike (4" tire) for snow riding but found it to be too slow for daily commuting. Most fun I've ever had on a bike, though.

Fresh snow is really easy to ride in if you're careful. Crusty snow is really difficult. Snow in which the top layer has iced over is impossible no matter what bike you choose.

Ice is very manageable with studded tires, unless fat bikes have been riding through and causing ruts to freeze, which is the case here right now.

I've resolved to taking the streets for now, as all main arteries are clear of ice but all side streets are 2" of ice.

Is there a difference between pearl Izumi thermal cycling and thermal bike tights?

The bike tights have been requested but I can get the cycling for 25$ cheaper on Amazon and have them for Christmas.

I'm not sure, Pearl Izumi has several models of tights and prices vary widely depending on outlet. It may be that the thermals are a thicker fabric than the tights, or they could be the exact same thing. Without links I can't be 100% sure.

I ordered them. The ones he sent said bike tights, the ones I found said cycling tights. Everything else was exactly the same. Literal only difference was the use of those two words. It's whatevs. He'll return them

Giving trail riding a go for the "cold" months. Love the change after spending three seasons on the road.

I commute in the fall and spring in jeans, and often in the winter with running tights beneath.

Yeah it actually works fine. I grew up on BMX bikes and it was always jeans or plain shorts depending on the weather. I ride DJ bikes now, same old jeans or shorts.

Not sure I would like to commute in Knoxville. Be safe. Maybe it has changed but people were never very gracious to road bikes around here when I last rode them.

I'm not in Knoxville, but it used to be the same here. Lately I've been helping with an all out pro-bike media blitz using some inside contacts at the local papers and news stations in conjunction with some laws being proposed in IL and IA. I've noticed I've gotten a lot more room lately.

I use Levi's commuter specific jeans. I had been having trouble with the seam placement and crotches ripping out of other jeans, but these stretch and have a reinforced crotch. Plus I found them on sale. They're reflective and water resistant, too. During the summer I'm 100% shorts.

That sounds really great! When I was on road bikes, people seemed to go out of their way to crowd you but that was fairly long ago, early 90s so maybe it has gotten better. There are a lot of shops around here now and I do see riders pretty frequently.

Chased my daughter around today on the street, just finding things to jump mostly and trying to keep up with her. Baker needs to dry out already. Temps are amazing but I don't do mud.

After three years of teasing myself, I finally did it. My new bae

New frame day! Identiti Krisis SL. It's (barely) used, can't wait to build it up. I wish 4x bikes were more popular in this country. Not my pic but the one I bought. Replacing a Yeti DJ.

I rode a Felt ZC for several years, two different versions of it. Loved those bikes.

How do you like the Spooky? Way back they made a Darkside frame that I really wanted. Did you ever deal with the company?

Don't laugh, but I've been hitting the virtual cycling vids in the spin room at Fort Sanders to get in shape for spring mountain biking. Dang good workout! I can't bring myself to ride on roads.
