The All Things Cycling Thread

18 miles this AM. I'll get out on the mtn bike this afternoon. Got run off the bike path and into the ditch by a jerk on a bike not paying attention. He yelled at me to tell him I was passing, then his wife yelled at him to tell him that I did say I was passing. He was just in the left lane when his wife and child were in the right. I tried to weave in between, but he rode right into my path. Lucky I went right into the ditch instead of left and right down the rock levee and into the Mississippi River.

Don't have "bike" paths here--they're MUPs.

Which means walkers can take up the breadth of the path, oblivious to any traffic coming behind them.

Same problem here, except there are signs that tell walkers to not do that. Doesn't matter, though. You can tell them you're passing on their left, but they'll just turn and look at you. Most of the time they'll even step into your path.

If there's sufficient space to pass, I often don't warn the walkers--just cruise on by. Less chance they'll step in the way.

Same here. easy ride with the misses the other day and some guy yells at me "get on the other side where you belong" as we pass with 5' to spare. My wife who is a subtle as a sledgehammer laughs really loud & then yells "hey I think he was talking to us" as she rolls by.

Cold and windy on my birthday. Had planned on spending the day in the saddle, but I just think I'll be miserable in this weather. I'll go thrash the trails this afternoon. It's supposed to rain all weekend, so the trails should be pretty messy for the race on Sunday. There were a ton of people out preparing for the race last night.

Thanks, VV.

This freaking wheel I'm building is kicking my ass. It doesn't help that everyone in the shop wants to talk to me while I'm building it.

Trashed my XT front derailleur last night on a root, so the shop owner took and put his personal XTR front derailleur on for tonight. -_-

Hub needs to be rebuilt/serviced and/or tightened. I'd almost bet that's the issue. I don't know how many times I have to tighten a hub when people bring their bikes in for a tune-up.

Months ago, when I took the wheel to the shop be trued (after I got hit by a car) the guy fiddled around with the hub for a bit. But he did not diagnose what the problem was.

Hm. Maybe it happened when you got hit? I couldn't diagnose it without actually having it in my hands. If you're looking for a new wheelset, I can get you a smoking deal on some Easton EA90's... ;) Or I could custom build you a set. Enve 25mm carbon tubulars laced to Dura-Ace hubs?

We heard back from Pinarello today and are officially the newest Pinarello, Eddy Mercx, and Pegoretti dealership. We plan on carrying Pinarello only, but have the option for the others. That's really going to piss some of the shops off here once the newest store in the area has the highest end bikes on the floor.

I don't know what's up--why they (two people looked at it) didn't identify the problem when it was at the shop. I do know I don't have a pile of money ready to buy a new wheel.

How do you "tighten" a hub?

The two nuts on either side of the hub and tighten them with a wrench.

Ok guys, after looking for a bike and trying to decide if I should go with a mountain bike or a road bike, I have come across a great deal on a mountain bike. I am trying to get the brand of the bike but the guy who has (a friend of mine) hasn't called me back. Anyways, on to the trouble. He has the bike is too small for me. It's a 17 inch frame and I am 6'2. He is asking $150 for the bike. My thought process is if I can buy this bike I might be able to do some trading to get a bike that better fits my size. Any help would be appericated. Thanks in advance
