The Association Football Thread

Unfortunately, athletes do that sort of thing all the time. Also, I tend to be accustomed to the idea that players from the isles tend to stay there in their prime, especially the Welsh.

Agreed, that's why I don't think it will happen. I think Alba is our main target.

He was an idiot and deserved it. Even if really didn't hear the whistle, which I don't believe, he still knew he was off and cranked it. And as soon as he did that he knew he was heading for the tunnel. Just plain stupidity. And barca still would have won.

Slightly arguable.

If Tottenham bombs out these last two matches or does jack chit with their potential CL spot and finishes mid-table next season, I could see Bale petitioning for a sale to one of the big five if the opportunity is there. But I just don't see him jumping to Barca.

He has dropped hints that he may do just that if Spurs fail to qualify for CL.

Yeah, just saying I don't see him leaving the Premier League.

Walker is resigned, and best yet...

'arry will be on BBC's Euro 2012 pundit panel with Klinsmann, Seedorf and David James.

Should be interesting, especially if England bombs out.

Which they almost certainly will. The Rooney suspension aside, that is still a squad in utter chaos right now. They just named their manager a few days ago. Even though when the draw came out, England may well have been pleased with their group that's going to be tough for them to advance. Odds are that France can't possibly match their pathetic performance from the 2010 WC, Sweden will be far from a guaranteed 3 pts without Rooney, and Ukraine is one of the hosts.

Who knows though. Maybe for once, coming into the tournament with little to no expectation from the English people for even minimal success, much less winning the thing will play to their advantage.

Has anybody heard any concrete ideas about who will actually play in the forward position for the first two games that Rooney will miss? They certainly don't have an elite forward beyond him.

I heard recently that Bent will make the team coming back from injury. I don't know if I believe that or not.

Also, I don't see how Welbeck doesn't get the consideration at F.

Possibly, but the three I mentioned and Gerrard are the only players other than Rooney that have a history of goal production in international competition. Not that he's seen much time for England, but I don't think Welbeck has scored a goal for the senior team yet.

He doesn't, and only has 4 total caps for the senior team. Not exactly the kind of guy you want to be pinning most of your goal-scoring hopes on going into a big international competition.

I'd rather see Andy Carroll starting than Peter crouch, and y'all know my feelings on Andy Carroll. That should say a lot.

Just picked up tickets for the my first game of the season. First time in the timbers army too... Time to start brushing up on chants

Not taking anything for granted after that pathetic showing at montreal. But I haven't been to the jelly for a timbers loss yet

When I started to go to RSL games they weren't very good ('07 or '08). Strangely, I had to go to like 12 games before I saw them lose (and I've still only seen them lose the one time). I was hoping that superstitious ownership would offer me free season tickets, but they never caught wind of me.

RSL has solid management and scouting, though.

PTFC couldn't be luckier to have an owner like Merritt Paulson (Hank Paulson's kid), but Gavin Wilkinson cannot put a roster together to save his life, and John Spencer can't seem to sort out the lineup.

We have one of the best strikers in the league (Boyd) and practically no way to get him the ball. We don't have a legitimate attacking midfield on the payroll, and have had to resort to midfielders playing wingback and putting the actual wings in the midfield... It's completely baffling.

Garth Lagerway (sp?) is a former keeper, and our GM. He has done an excellent job, primarily in midfield. We've had at least 5 solid MFers on the roster every year since I've been following. That goes a long way.
