The Association Football Thread

He doesn't, and only has 4 total caps for the senior team. Not exactly the kind of guy you want to be pinning most of your goal-scoring hopes on going into a big international competition.

Against some of the other options I'd take him. He is an exciting young player and can make things happen.

that was a pretty wild game. if that cat for Arsenal would have scored on that heel kick, i might have jumped off the couch. its rare that i get that amped over a match that isnt USMNT.

My wife and I are going out with my brother and his wife to watch the FA Cup.

He's a huge Blues fan and I'll Never Walk Alone. We've seen some epic battles the last few years. Hope today is a great game as well

I disagree that he should have gotten the start, but I will say that he looked good and played his best game in a Liverpool jersey in the 35 minutes he played today. He must have cut out the beer this week. Unfortunately for him he didn't improve his league scoring record...

Goal line technology argument grows stronger...

What was your opinion on it before?

i like the playoffs and still do but i think, now, that the playoffs diminish the importance of individual games and you get coaches like Arenas holding back good players from games for whatever reason. the top 3 teams in EPL go to Champions League. not sure if they have any form of relegation, but the games have a sense of importance like college football games do, here. the lower tier teams can also majorly piss in the cheerios of the higher ranked teams and cost them a chance at a title. i guess im just saying that i like the story lines that develop over the course of the season, in EPL, as this is the first season ive paid attention.

I feel like that goes towards the whole discussion of how much should the MLS emulate the big-time European leagues, and IMO not that much.

- First common complaint I hear is that the season ought to line up with the Euro leagues. IMO, no. The timing of the MLS season is good as-is, it only has the dog days of summer to compete with for the most part, and it provides a nice off-season alternative for those who do watch UEFA leagues. IIRC Russia is the only other relevant league out there who has a season that lines up with MLS, but they do it out of necessity.
- The Supporters' Shield matters more to hardcore MLS fans than you give it credit for, and the playoffs are viewed almost totally separately from the regular season.
- Aside from GK's, nobody makes all the starts in footy, everybody gets rotated in. Even the absolute best players on the planet will sit for a handful of league games for reasons other than reds or injuries.

Plus, the US Open Cup is a fun watch, equivalent to the FA Cup, except that we have so many fewer pro teams that you wind up with local rec and amateur clubs up against the MLS teams if they can make it to the third round.

Past that, check out CONCACAF champions league if you get a shot sometime. It's obviously no UEFA, but the best MLS clubs and a number of the Mexican Primera clubs make for some worthy football.

Great experience. Timbers army is general admission, so whoever shows up first gets the good seats. I showed up about three hours prior to kick and I was in the nose bleeds in a section of about 12,000

I find myself extremely hungover this day after cinco de drinko, and all I want is a draw from city.

Is that too much to ask for? I want to taste Mancini's tears.

Howard Webb is on one today.

No hesitation at all reaching for that left pocket. I'm waiting to see red in the second half. For what team, I still don't know.

Please, Howard, don't let your sworn enemies win the league. We need you to make up for the ****ty performance last week. I can already hear the city supporters and MU haters screaming conspiracy... Lets just hope that city doesn't get 3 points and we do. No time for fooling around today.

I don't care how it happens, I just want a draw or a Newcastle win. I hope Webb points to the spot for Demba Ba at the death of the match.
