What do you guys think about the Euros? Favorites?

I like our chances (DFB) to get to the final as long as we can win group. It's easily the toughest group with Netherlands and Portugal. If we win, we will likely stay on the opposite end of the bracket as Spain and will likely face England, Italy, or France in the semifinal. Provided that we beat the Runner Up of Group A, which is by far the weakest group.

Has England announced their squad yet?

Germany tends to be a decent tournament team and think they will have a good shot at making it deep into the Cup and hopefully to the final. Screw France and Italy. And England will probably have high potential and fizz out again for whatever reason. Benn that way my whole adult life.

Spain
Italy

Group D

Looks good to me. Good picks.

Hodgson is announcing his group tomorrow. People are speculating that Terry will not be going as he will only take one between Rio and JT.

I read a good quote about Roy leaving JT at home so he can spend time thinking about his upcoming court case.

I'm worried about who will be up top the first two games. I sure hope it's Welbeck over crouch or Carroll.. But we'll have to see final squads first I suppose. I wouldn't mind Carroll so much if he looks as he has past couple games but without Rooney I'm afraid of getting behind in the group stage.. Will have to wait and see.

As for picks, excluding England, I'm saying Germany, Netherlands, or even Portugal. Ok screw it, being bold and going with Portugal as my non-England pick.

I like the Netherlands to win it all and I think Spain will drop out sooner than expected.

England will crash and burn and there will be drama that will carry over into the Premier league season.

That's who I root for in Europe. My bro-in-law who got me into soccer is 2nd generation Dutch, so we watch their games. It doesn't hurt that they play an exciting style of football.

England's expectations are too high. I mentioned this book, Soccernomics, and it explains that football dominance is a function of 3 variables: Population, Wealth, and Experience*.

Brits see all the success Germany has had, and they see Germany as a peer so they expect the same kind of results. Germany is not their peer because they have twice the population, or talent pool that England has. England doesn't really under-perform. They perform pretty much on point with what you'd expect based on those variables.

I'd agree with that. I also think that with England and Germany, there is a lot more subtext than between other countries, like the war, 66 and 90 world cup, etc.

I've been putting off reading that book for far too long.

The book was a pretty interesting read, but there are some countries that don't fit with that theory. Holland is the first one that comes to mind. They are step for step, if not actually a little better, than Germany, yet they have less than 1/4 the population, comparable wealth per capita and probably a comparable footballing history in their nation.
