The Association Football Thread

Also, happy as anyone to see man u lose out on the title, sucks that it had to be city but it is what it is. Congrats, hell of a finish

Anyone who claims united is the yankees of soccer is completely clueless (regarding cheering against them). If you want to cheer against someone like the yankees then cheer against city who have spent probably a billion dollars in the last two years on players. They're the Yankees, not united. Don't hold it against MU because they are a historically successful club. They have been successful not because of money, but because of talent, drive, and desire for success. City and their oil money make me sick.

Madrid, barca, city, united, bayern. That's not based on this year alone or European play, just who I feel are top 5 currently or recently have been.

Honorable mention to inter, chelsea, Dortmund for play either recently past or recently seen.

I mean we could go way back and start throwing ajax, juve, etc. but I'll stand by my top 5 clubs in Europe at this very moment in time.

That's a fair assessment. I wasn't really being defensive or a homer. I was curious about who your top 5 would be.

It's just a change of scenery is all.

United are like the Yankees because they win more than anyone else and they spend a lot of money. City are nothing like the Yankees. The Yankees just didn't show up over night like City did. In the end they both suck.

Honestly, I can't hate on City or Man U for spending insane amounts and running crazy deficits. If any of the sports teams I liked were bought up buy some Sheikh or Prokhorov who would drop $150mil a year on salaries, I would love it. So if I hated City or Man U for spending to win, it would be disingenuous.

Soccernomics.

Fascinating book, and any soccer fan should pick it up. It's co-written by Stefan Szymanski (economist), and journalist Simon Kuper (Football Against the Enemy, another great book about soccer). Their findings were very interesting. For instance, payroll and winning is very highly correlated in the EPL. A lot more correlation than in MLB. The book explains why England "sucks" and why Germany dominates, etc. It's really cool.

Chelsea needs to lose so tottenham makes the cl.

And watching the arsenal game yesterday, the goalie for west brom was definitely paid off. What a joke that guy was.

Have you ever "stared" into Wenger's eyes? I doubt I could hold his gaze for more than 3 seconds before looking away. Dude's eyes alone are terrifying, creepily resembles one of the terrorist's eyes from Team America. If I were the keeper and Wenger even looked my direction, I'd concede a goal too.

I'm over my bitterness today. City had a tremendous season, and united did not help themselves down the stretch, so a toast to the victors (just not kompany and his alien head).

At least have CL final to look forward too, then transfers! Hoping Kagawa makes the move to old trafford. I'd like to see another midfielder as well and I'll be ecstatic. Also fire sale Berbs and sell Nani and replace with another winger and I'll be beyond ecstatic.

I guess have mls to look forward to as well... Only really care about watching Becks though.

give mls a shot, outside of new york and galaxy. Much of it is just honest grassroots football. the low quality of play can be infuriating and entertaining all at once. But theres no prawn sandwiches to be found anywhere

I do enjoy watching teams from the northwest, especially Sounders and Timbers. Their fans and stadium atmosphere almost give me reason enough to travel that way just to watch a match.

Bit different for the Sounders though... Yes, they draw a crapload of people, but the owners poured millions into marketing and promos to get people to show up initially. But prior to MLS, nobody was in the stands.

The pitch here draws 20k for any given match, but the Timbers Army was still showing up by the thousands, waving flags, raising huge banners and lighting smoke bombs even back when Timbers were third tier.

The Euro is this summer too.
