The Association Football Thread

Is it just me or is the play all together sloppy, on both sides. Granted SOME of the big names are sitting this one out. But i would think at the level of play this is that passes, trapping, and first touches all together would be a little more precise.

I think a part of it is lack of chemistry. But I agree that we don't look crisp with our touches either. The defense has a lot to get sorted out. Saturday should tell us more about what we have in my opinion.

That game was about what should've been expected. Had some defensive breakdowns that need to get sorted out but otherwise I thought we played ok tactically. The last goal shouldn't have happened. Kljeston played sloppy the majority of the time he was in and it finally cost us. One positive to take away from the game is that the players who played the whole game looked fit. Goodson, Edu (minus last 5 minutes or so), and holden were pleasant surprises tonight. It will be interesting to see what happens saturday.

Who's your favorite team? Just wondering.

I want to see Germany do well, but I'd rather avoid the US playing them. Those would be the two teams I'm pulling for, with the US obviously being first.

If US were playing Germany it wouldn't even be close. Go USA!! When we played them last time in the World Cup my father in-law and I were going at it (in good spirit).

No Ching looks like the only major surprise, but I've never been a big fan of his anyways. I like the look of that squad.

Gomez looked horrible IMO. Him and Buddle were giving the effort but they looked very overmatched.

It's not like they'll be starting. If they see playing time it will be while being surrounded by the starters. In that situation, I'd rather have a guy giving a lot of effort but is a little overmatched, than a guy who isn't giving the effort.

Agreed. I don't have a problem with either inclusion.

Looking at the age of the US roster and player pool, I think the US could make a serious tournament run in 2014 and 2018.

I agree but the guy doesn't even start for one of the worst teams in the Mexican League. I think it's a reflection of how bad our striking options are.

In my opinion, Dempsey has to be moved up to striker. Him with Altidore is doable. I wish Davies was able to play. If that stuff about the French club telling Bradley he wasn't ready when he is, I'll be pretty upset.

I'd like to see

Boca...........Gooch..........Demerit.........Spector

...........................Edu.................................

.................Feilhaber..........Bradley.................

Donovan..........................................Dempsey

.........................Altidore..............................

I'd still move Dempsey up. Donovan can be an attacking midfielder, but Dempsey has to be a forward, IMO.

Agreed. Holden looks to be a solid option on the wing freeing Dempsey to play up top. He's one of the few creative players on the roster and isn't scared to take a shot. We need that up front.

He's also one of the best technical players the country has ever had. He's a legitimate scoring threat against good teams. Altidore hasn't scored that much, but he's shown the ability to create chances around the box consistently, and he's getting better. The other forwards don't seem to have much hope of accomplishing anything outside the CONCACAF region. I hear praise for them all the time, and they may look decent in the MLS or in lowly qualifiers at times, but they aren't going to do a whole lot of damage against a World Cup team. Seriously, for all the praise Ching sometimes generates, I'm not sure he's ever scored on a team better than Honduras.
