They have a tendency to play too aggressively. David Luiz is a mistake waiting to happen. This match says more about Spain than Brazil imo.

Well that's why they have those two holding mids that keep the defense compact when Marcelo and Alves attack. And to be honest, Alves is playing way more conservatively than he normally does.

And Silva's composure compensates for Luiz. Silva is a great organizer defensively.

Will the games be in the afternoon? Like the Champions League? I was guessing 245ET and 6ET for the majority of game times.

It's a pretty big variety. The time zone on the coast where Rio is is two hours ahead of EST. Kickoff times for the group stage will be at 11:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 8:00 here on the east coast.

Wow. I didn't realize that.

For some reason, I thought I read that the games were all being played by 3 ET to allow Europe to be able to watch

It's actually a pretty good deal for everyone involved. Other than the 8:00 games, all the games will be over by midnight or so in Western Europe.

Who here saw that game coming? Crazy crazy crazy

Brazil looks ridiculously good

They do, but the question will be the back four. As amazing as David Luiz clearance off the line was just before halfime, he's prone to doing something equally as disastrous at times too. If they can just keep it together and not give up goals by the boatload, the goal scoring should be there for them, as evidenced by their 4-2 win over Italy. It's also worth noting that the WC will be a different animal altogether. Brazil pummeled the best team in the world today, but winning the WC will require them to beat 3 or 4 teams nearly that good in succession. I've never been a big Brazil fan, but if they're going to look like that next summer, I'll have a hard time not pulling for them to win the thing.

Correction from my math on the WC kickoff times. I didn't realize that Brazil isn't on Daylight Savings time now because it's winter, so during our summer it's only an hour difference. Group stage games will kick at 12:00, 3:00, 4:00, 6:00 and 9:00. Round of 16 and Quarterfinal games kick at 12:00 and 4:00. Semifinals and the 3rd place game kick at 4:00 and the Final starts at 3:00.

Not really. When a team as talented as Brazil is that on point, there's nobody they can't beat. If Torres is any good next year, Spain could still win the World Cup.

Just saying, it's always the next great team. Just a couple of years ago Germany was the new best team in the world. I'm not saying I think Spain isn't on the decline and I'm not saying they are, just always seem like an overreaction to the immediate.

If anyone is prone to making mental lapses it is Silva, not Luiz. He used to be really bad about running forward and losing the ball, but stopped after time in the PL. Personally, I wouldn't ask a single question about David Luiz' play. Go back and watch the tape of that clearance and you'll realize it was a 2 on 1, he was the only one that stayed back, he forced the first man into the pass, and came across perfectly to make the block. It wasn't just dumb luck, he is world class.

Edit: and for the record, this is coming from an Arsenal fan. I would love to sh*t talk him, but it just isn't possible.

This was my main concern with him. In all honesty, I didn't really see a who lot of Chelsea this past season. The majority of the opinion I stated was formed during that stretch the year before last where AVB was managing Chelsea and the whole squad was just a complete mess. If you say he's curbed some of his tendencies to charge forward, lose the ball at the worst time and subsequently be completely out of position to defend, then that would eliminate my biggest worries about Luiz.

He doesn't do that anymore. Many people including myself think he would be stronger as a holding mid, but he can get it done as a centerhalf

I think he could be a great holding midfielder, but I think he has the potential to be the worlds best CB.

Anyone going to be watching the Messi and friends allstar game starting on ESPN? Not really sure what to expect.

Mario Gomez out, Thiago Alcantara in for Bayern. Great player but I already like our midfield with Schweinsteiger and Martinez.
