The Association Football Thread

voted. I have tried to watch MLS but I just can't get into it. I don't know why just not as "clean" as EPL. I need to go see some live games and that might get my blood going. I do try and watch the finals every year.

The only real problem I have with the MLS is the smaller field.
I enjoy watching international matches, especially since we just got Fox Soccer Channel, but I don't know how to choose "my" team. I like that I recognize a lot of the MLS players, and it's easy to follow.

The one thing I have against watching MLS is the crowds at the games. Generally they're small and not very vocal, I've always found that I enjoy the game a lot more when there's a passionate crowd.

I've been to many many Bayern Munich games. Fun stuff. Those fans are definitely a drinking and singing crowd. Love the opposing chants they throw at one another.

I loved it during the 2006 WC when the English fans were singing "God Save the Queen".

I've yet to see an MLS game, outside of the playoffs/finals, that had more passion than the average NAIA lacrosse match.

Just curious, how many MLS games have you been to...really? Where were they?
Maybe things are just different in Columbus. I just know that what I saw was a lot of fun.

I've never been to an MLS game, I've just seen them on TV.

I realize that an in-person experience will likely be different, but I'm standing by what I've said. Outside of the playoffs, MLS crowds are about as lively as a New England funeral procession.

Mighty passionate opinions on something you don't really have any experience with. You are basing the crowd participation based on what you see on tv? Give something a chance before you try to speak intelligently about it.

when you can hear the players yelling to each other through the announcer's microphones, the crowd isn't really into the game.

Maybe I've just caught the broadcast of bad matchups, but there's no need to insult my intelligence or for you to act insulted by my opinion.

Easy there Breakfast Club. I wasn't insulting your intelligence at all. I simply said that you should know what you're talking about before trying to speak intelligently about the MLS. Two different things.
For instance, the extent of my hockey knowledge rests with the Mighty Ducks movies. You won't see me going to a hockey thread to share my opinions on the NHL. That would be because I couldn't speak intelligently about the subject.

again, maybe I've just caught the broadcast of a bad matchup, add to that the fact that there aren't that many MLS games offered on the cable package I have.

regardless, I prefer watching UEFA in general and EPL in particular

bump

Now that the World Cup is over for the USA, if you're looking to find more games, particularly the MLS -

LA Galaxy vs Toronto FC - 7:30PM Tonight, Fox Soccer Channel.

Tomorrow on ESPN 2, Seattle Sounders vs Philadelphia Union - 5:00PM

If you can access the MLS Direct Kick package, that's a good way to go.

If you are looking to find more games, just watch the rest of the World Cup. Not the horrible MLS

I get so frustrated when people bash the MLS without truly giving it a shot. It's good soccer, I don't care what you think. Sure, they may not have any teams that can compete in the Champions League, but give it a chance. I really equate MLS-haters with the people who think it's cool to hate on soccer as a whole. If you are an American soccer fan, I really think you'd enjoy the MLS if you picked a team and followed the league with an open mind.
Remember that it's still a new league. The NFL was almost bankrupt after 15 years, too. I'd say that eventually "caught on", wouldn't you?

I watched almost the entire MLS playoffs last year. It was very difficult to watch.

See, I just don't understand that. I understand what it means to watch a "difficult-to-watch" match, but I don't get that from the MLS. I've even muscled through a Women's Professional Soccer game before. Yes, that was like watching paint dry, but the MLS has good players and is a solid product. The top half of the MLS can beat 50% of the teams in the EPL. That's good enough for me when supporting a local product that I can see quite a bit off on FSC and ESPN2.
It just sounds a little snobby to bash on the local product when it really isn't THAT inferior to the international alternative.

Yeah, ok.
