The Association Football Thread

I have vacation time coming up in september and October, I might try to take in an MLS game, Columbus is closest to Knoxville, but KC is also a possibility since I'm going to be in Western Missouri for some of that time.

Breakfast Club, trust me that you'll really enjoy the experience at a Columbus game. Their fan base is definitely one of the most active in the league. Plus, the starting keeper is a friend of mine.
Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, we love you we love you we love you, and where you go we'll follow, we'll follow, we'll follow, we are from Columbus, Columbus, Columbus, and that's the way we like it, we like it, we like it, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh!

How would you stack up the EPL against Serie A, and La Liga on a year to year basis?

I can't comment on Serie A since I don't follow that league very much. In terms of La Liga and the EPL, you take the four best teams from both leagues, and it is a bloodbath. They are very evenly matched. After that, the EPL has much more quality in their teams from the middle and bottom of the table.

Okay, two items here.

1) I have watched a fair amount of MLS, but have never been able to get into a particular team. Should I bother?

2) I need an EPL team. Give me one.

Watch a few games and you will probably find one that you like. Don't pick a team based on a wiki page. You start rooting for them even though you are actually drawn to another team.

Also, there is no probably to it. Ligue 1 and Eredivisie are better than MLS and it ain't even that close.

The J-League is better than MLS.

10 years ago Serie A was on par with just about any league out there, at least in the same way La Liga is with the top 4 or 5 sides. However, after the match fixing scandal from about 5 years ago, the league has gone significantly down hill. Outside of Inter, I don't think there are many teams that are really on the level of any other top Euro sides. Now with Mourinho gone, it'll be interesting to see how even they fair next season.

Serie A is pretty deep. Also surprised no one has mentioned the Bundesliga.

I don't a whole lot about the all the various leagues around the world, especially in South America, but it's certainly behind the EPL, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga. Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie are also probably better. Those are the leagues that essentially every player on every competitive team in the WC plays for. MLS may very well be the highest quality league in the world outside of Europe.

I did. Still, the Bundesliga isn't particularly deep, even though they do have one great team in Bayern Munich.

If you base you opinion on how the other teams have played in the Champions League I do,nt blame you one bit for having that opinion. Not sure why they can't compete other than Bayern. The teams are good but once they make it to the CL they turn to crap. Kind of like the English in the World Cup I guess.

The teams England sends to the cup are wildly overrated...

Only by the people in their own nation. They are legends in their own minds. Most people outside of England knew pretty well that that team wasn't winning the WC. I've been reading this book called Soccernomics, and it breaks down all kinds of data, and basically came to the conclusion that given their population, soccer experience and wealth with comparison to the rest of the world, they perform about on par with what should be expected. If any of you get a chance, check that book out, it's pretty interesting.

If you truly enjoy watching the game played well, pick Arsenal. And that's coming from a former Liverpool fan.

And if you wanna watch some MLS, the Sounders would be a great place to start. They seem to actually give a damn about the team and the sport, so it feels more like watching professional soccer, and less like a high school football game.

That's surprising. They have actual chants instead of the lame Ole Ole.

Columbus has a solid fan base. I believe they even have three groups of fans that all come together for the game. One of the groups is called the "Hudson Street Hooligans", so I wonder if they want to be like Green Street Hooligans.
Columbus is playing Philly on FSC tomorrow night. I think the game is at Philly, so watch with knowledge that they are an expansion team this year. I do like watching Philly's striker (Moreno) play, though.

I watche the Dynamo v Toronto FC, and it was the most painful thing I've watched in a while. If that was representative of an average game, the MLS has gotten infinitely worse from when I stopped watching it.

Toronto and Philadelphia are two of the bottom teams in the eastern conference...which is the weaker conference right now. That was like watching South Carolina play Vanderbilt in football and basing an opinion on the SEC by that game alone.

It was pretty ****in terrible, though.

I was reading that Man City's GK feels confident about City's chances to compete for the league title this year. They've added David Silva and Jerome Boateng. He said they're looking to make more moves, and that by the end of the window - hopefully they're able to compete with Man Utd and Chelsea for top honors.

I would think they'd focus on finishing in the top four, first.

Here is a direct quote:

"Obviously we are not up there with the likes of Chelsea and Man United in terms of trophies on the mantelpiece, we have to catch up in that sense, but by the time we have put our whole squad together by the end of this window then we will have as good a squad as them which will hopefully mean that we will be able to challenge them.

"We want to win something this season. We have a good squad of players so there's no reason why we shouldn't be challenging for top honours."

My God. That oil money is being put to good use.

This is much better. LA could be a decent second tier side in any European League. I bet they could be a top 5 side in Serie A
