The Association Football Thread

I don't at all understand the logic behind starting this group in the midfield. I know Donovan is sick, but Bradley, Dempsey, and all the other guys are as well? Not only is this group bad as a whole, but it isn't really good experience for the future, either. I'd be upset if any of those guys (with the possible exception of Jones) is playing in 2014 in Brazil.

Well, aren't some of those guys getting ready for another league championship? I may be wrong but I don't follow the league stuff that closely, just international team stuff.

I don't really know what to say. The only one I'm really unhappy with is Bradley. Selecting this lineup was stupid.

Fear not, the representative from Nacadoches Texas is taking the field this half.

We'll get one atleast.

1. Michael Bradley is awesome
2. I'm about ready for his dad to be done with the national team
3. Dempsey should stay up top. He doesn't really do much as a winger.
4. Agudelo needs to get more time with the first team. I'm not sure why Bradley insists on playing him with the backups.
5. Wondolowski impressed. I haven't seen him play much before. At the moment, both are doing considerably better than Jozy.
6. Robbie Rogers and Sacha Kljestan really shouldn't be playing for the national team.
7. I'd like to see Goodson over Onyewu from now on.
8. I like Cherundolo and Bocanegra, but after this Gold Cup, I'd rather not see them as much. I think they'll be too old for Brazil.
9. I'm interested to see the lineup against Canada. Surely it will look considerably different than the starting lineup today.
10. Whoever is in charge of the national anthem setup, please stop insisting on having a solo performer. It's never better than the crowd.

1. One of the most underrated players in the world.
2. Possibly.
3. Y.
4. Y. I think given opportunity he could play big time football
5. He seemed alright.. We will see if it was because they turned off.
6. +1000000000000 Sacha turns like a bus.
7. ehhh.. Onyewu is solid on set pieces.
8. Agreed. Timmy Chandler should be the guy for us by 2014 at RB.
9. I'd say they bring out the big guns (well for Americans).
10. +100

Christ, I feel like I typed this because I agree with it all so much.

At a very basic level, our defensive play in front of the goalie is atrocious. We don't mark men, and we keep those unmarked men ONSIDES, AND we don't keep consistent pressure on the ball. I know that it was Spain and we were supposed to lose, but There isn't many teams in South America or Europe who aren't going to feast on us with that kind of crap.

IMO, the USA has one of the worst back lines of any "top 25" national team. And the thing is, a lot of that play is about technique and cohesiveness as a unit, not physical skill.

I thought that if you played on a national team you had to stay with them..

Did I just make that up in my head??

think you can change as long as you haven't scored a goal for your team in international competition. That is what I have heard, but perhaps I have misunderstood.

I believe the rule is you can change as long as you haven't played more than 3 games for a country (Chandler has 2 appearances at the moment) and that you have only played in friendlies. I could be wrong about this. Playing in the Gold Cup would have locked him in.

My big concern about the future leading up to the 24 world cup is that Bob Bradley seems stubborn to me. There's really no reason to play guys like Ricardo Clark much anymore, but I'm afraid Bradley will insist.

My problem is looks like when he tries to change something, he makes a lot of changes that don't really help anyone learn anything. For example, I think it's great that Agudelo, Lichaj, and Ream are getting some playing time. However, if we want an indication of their future performance, we shouldn't put them up against arguably the best team in the world without even giving them a midfield to work with.

That's my biggest beef from yesterday. Fielding that **** midield against the best international midfield in the world was stupid. And that's why we were ran off the field.

I don't actually believe this, but it's almost like he does that to justify sticking to his favorites instead of trying new guys. I'm interested to see the changes after the Gold Cup because that should give us a better indication of his plans for 2014, IMO.
