Why is Rick Ankiel getting AB's down the stretch? He's starting in CF again tonight.

Because at heart Bobby's just an AYSO coach. Everybody gets to play.
What I really don't get is what has happened to Eric Hinske's playing time. Even with the defensive dropoff, I'd much rather see Hinske's bat in there vs. Ankiel hitting .200 and striking out 2 or 3 times.

The Braves just can't catch a break. That ball was right on the line.

. . . and Joe Simpson is right. That was just an awful throw from McLouth. What could he possibly have been thinking?

Sutton says Mclouth had a real shot if he hits cutt-off.
It wasn't just that he missed the cutoff man. He played the carom and just spun around and threw an arching .like his arm was sore or something.

The only hope now is that Lidge will crap out on his 3rd day in a row and serve up a fat one to somebody. This has been a good series, but the Braves just can't buy a break.

Just a punch in the gut tonight. Give up 4 hits all night long and lose 1-0 on a fly ball double that hits the chalk.

Doesn't look good with Phils sweep in Philly-Braves lost 1-0 tonight. Slim hope are dwindling with a 1/2 game lead for the wild card. Braves need some help and win all remaining 9 games, but that is slim the way Phils are playing down the stretch. Braves are now 6 back with 9 left. Braves HAVE to SWEEP at home against Phils, otherwise it's lights out for the playoffs.

The division race ended a couple of days ago. Its now just a matter of whether they can win enough to hold onto the wildcard.

That's more like it.
No doubt that had some impact but both teams have had significant injury issues. The big difference is that the Phillies have gotten brilliant starting pitching the past month.

It's going to help the Braves at least a little that the Padres and Giants are playing one another in the final series of the year. At least they can't both be winning those final 3 days. That said, the Wild Card will be won or lost for Atlanta over the course of the next week. Gotta get some wins against the Nats and Marlins so they don't leave it all on the line against the Phillies.

I just don't see them making the playoffs. What a let down.

The lineup has turned out to be a bat or two short after all, as pretty much everybody expected. It was good enough as long as the starting pitching was humming, but when that abruptly crashed in September (starters: ERA of almost 5 this month), the offense couldn't pick up the slack.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the Braves apparently cut $10m in payroll this season while making no attempt to sign any meaningful free agents. Even for Cox's last year. This team is apparently only going to make a halfassed attempt to compete as long as Liberty Media owns it.

Where do the Braves stand exactly? Anyone broken down remaining schedules? Who had the advantage at this point?

I believe it looks like this:

Braves -- Nats, Marlins, Phillies
Giants -- Rockies, D-Backs, Padres
Rockies -- Giants, Dodgers, Cardinals
Padres -- Reds, Cubs (4), Giants

So theoretically the Braves should be in decent shape, especially if you figure that the Phillies will probably resting some guys the last weekend, but the way they've been playing lately it's hard to be too optimistic. Dropping game one against the Nats hurts.

Even the bad teams have been giving the Braves trouble for the last month. This would be nothing short of a choke job if they mi the playoffs. Sure, it was likely that the Phillies would catch up, but the pack has caught up to the Braves in the Wild Card race too. Bobby might retire a few weeks earlier than we'd like. This team has lot of flaws and they are all showing at the same time. Bad timing for that...

I distinctly remember being told the Braves had superior pitching. How on earth has this happened?
The Braves bullpen is still better and for about 100 games, the Braves were better from 1-5 in the rotation. Unfortunately the season is 162 games.
