That's awesome though. Ricky was a baller
Last week my dad showed my boy a picture of 15-year-old me wearing a 1985 Rickey Henderson Yankees shirtzee, and instead of laughing about my hair or how young I was, my kid was just angry that I was wearing a Yankees shirt. I've done a good job with that boy.
The Yankees were so hapless in the mid 80s that my 15 year old self didn't have a problem wearing a Rickey Henderson shirtzee, especially since my own team was even worse. My dad didn't do as good a job instilling all these tribal hatreds in me as I have done in my own son. My kid gets irritated if I talk to somebody wearing a leghumper hat, which as you can imagine happens all the time since we live in Georgia. I've made sure to take lots of video of him talking about how much he hates the buttsniffers since I feel like it's inevitable that one day he's going to go to school over there.
So he was anti-Hooters, eh?
Murphy's clean-living habits off the diamond were frequently noted in the media. A devout Latter-day Saint, or Mormon, Murphy did not drink alcoholic beverages, would not allow women to be photographed embracing him and paid his teammates' dinner checks as long as alcoholic beverages were not on the tab. He also refused to give television interviews unless he was fully dressed.
