The Atlanta Braves Thread

Can’t believe the great Mike Vrabel didn’t end up in New England.

Maybe he is an idiot and played himself???

But in all seriousness, despite my frustrations, he’s a good GM. Makes sense they locked him up for a significant amount of time.

Jesus Alex is only 46???? He could be here another 25 years. I didn’t realize he was like 32 when he got the Jays GM job

Yeah. He's 10 years older than me but he's one of those guys who makes me go "What the hell have I done in my life?" Not as much as some of these GMs who are in their 30s though. The Pittsburgh Penguins GM is 38 but could pass for a guy 8-10 years younger.

These guys are over here being multi millionaires, and I'm over here hoping to hit $15/hr...... we are not the same.

To me, the striking thing isn't just the money they make. These guys run around in a totally different circle. Make big strategic decisions. Are public figures, and deal with lots of pressure from media, fans, etc. Grueling travel, in some cases. And they're basically my age. I have a regular office job and get to WFH 3 days a week, lol. It's hard for me to wrap my head around.

I'm still used to people in those positions of power/authority being way older than me. But I'm getting to the age now where some of them aren't and it's weird.

I just get aggravated because a lot of times it's just who they know/knew or who their families know.

I would argue, Z for instance probably could be pretty good at the whole GM thing if he got a chance to get brought up through the system and taught the fine details, but he's likely to never get that chance. But then you have the idiots in Oakland who have no clue what they're doing.

Not in all cases, but who you know and (more importantly) the relationships you do have with the people you know is a skill.

Also, knowing somebody typically gets you in the door but won't keep you in the room. Especially in very competitive environments.

My sister went to a softball camp at UT in 07. The camp was held at the indoor football facility.
I heard the team was coming in to do bowl prep. My brother and I ran to the bookstore, bought a hat, and waited outside. Most of the players walked past us. Then one guy stopped. It was the guy who was about to get drafted in the first round - Jerrod Mayo. He signed for us. Then he flagged everyone else down and had them sign it until it was full. A bunch of NFL dudes signed it. Even Eric Berry is on there. But there’s not one there cooler than Mayo. He’s been that dude from day one. Happy for that guy.

I had forgotten he was taken 10th overall. Didn't remember him being that high.
