The Battle 4 Atlantis Game 1 Postgame Report

All the high hopes for this season are now gone. Now it's just a matter of how bad will it be? Anyone that still tries to defend Martin is just being foolish.

On a side note, I remember watching the open practice and thinking to myself "my god, I hope this isn't what his real practices actually look like. If they are it's no wonder we have been mediocre the last couple years"

Please elaborate.

Out of curiosity, what were his practices like?

Three man weave drills with CCM walking around, a piece of paper sticking out of his shorts saying "good, good, good, good" a million times.

There was very little teaching that took place. Just drills and then more drills.

I'm oversimplifying it yes, but it wasn't much different than that.

We clearly were better than them the 1st game and our kids will have a serious chip on their shoulders tomorrow

I hope you're right but I don't agree about the "clearly better" part. And I think it's going to take more than a chip to improve their game.

That would explain the lack of development from Stokes and others.

It's official. CCM said we just didn't take advantage of opportunities.
Quite an insight.

I think Martin has done a great job actually developing players and maturing them. In stokes case he has vastly improved skill wise from how raw he was his freshman year as a 17 year old. Richardson has grown more confident and developed a shooting ability. McRae has matured under CCM as a person because IMO CCM has served as a great role model to Jordan and that is what he needed more than anything.

The problem is that although the players have improved, the offense, game plans and strategies have not, and there are no signs that it will. Martin IMO is half of a good coach. Unfortunately that attributes to being a reasonably mediocre one.

I think this a pretty accurate statement.

Don't forget how well Maymon improved from his sophomore to junior year.

If Christon doesn't rehydrate we might have a shot.
Not a chance if he's healthy.

Yeah, I've watched a few open practices and they are nothing like what Bill Self was showing tonight.

I'm about to do a front flip right off this CCM bandwagon. I've supported him just about as long as I can. He will have to now prove me wrong to bring me back on board. I've seen the same TN team going on 3 years now. Can't play inspired basketball on the road. Can't hit FTs on the road. Stupid substations. Never seems like we have a game strategy. IMO we lose to Xavier tomorrow, beat a bad USC team, and lose to Wichita State on the road. Most of the decent SEC games we play this year are on the road. We will sitting on Selection Sunday hoping once again that a great home record against mediocre SEC teams and the one win against Virginia will be enough to get us in the big tourney.

Well everyone hoping to get Xavier again got their wish. Who knew it would be in the loser's bracket? LMAO. Sorry, you have to find humor in the colossal f up that was tonight's game.

Thank goodness I went to the hockey game instead, but got to listen to the last 10 minutes of the game. Bert basically said we got outplayed. I'd add another. We got outcoached too. I've watched part of the game and I really don't need to see much more. This coaching staff does nothing to help its team out. Whoever is in charge of coaching post defense should be fired right now. They are a colossal F up. They couldn't coach these guys out of a wet paper sack. It is completely atrocious.

Again, I've asked numerous times what this team does well and can hang its hat on? Can someone name something this team does well (besides missing free throws and allowing countless points inside)? You can't because it doesn't exist. Martin is clueless and lost as last year's Easter egg. His in game coaching is atrocious and his teams have looked like complete and total sh*t in Nov and Dec for the last 3 years. It's so pathetic it's comical. Floyd coached circles around him as I feared. Any coach worth his salt will coach circles around him usually.

Folks, there comes a time when you know something isn't going to work out. I felt it after the Xavier game, and after a day of thinking, I gave him another chance since it was on the road. Not anymore. When you are favored to win by 7 on a neutral court and pretty much get run off the court in the 2nd half and lose by 8 then it's obvious that Martin is in over his head. Make any kind of excuse that you want to, but the obvious is staring you right in the face. He's a NIT coach. We "might" make the NCAA's with him, but if we were to keep him 10 years, I'm betting he'll make the NIT way more than the NCAA's. This athletic dept makes too much damn money to keep a mediocre coach. Hart will have a decision to make at the end of the season. Martin will do what he always does. He'll pick off some teams in Jan and Feb, but he'll be scrambling to make the tourney and we'll be sweating it out yet again on Selection Sunday.

If I had one wish, I would wish I could go back in time and never allow UT to hire Mike Hamilton and I'd fire everyone in the administration that was involved in the hiring of Kiffin, Dooley, Martin and Raleigh. Only Serrano may work out. His hires in the football, basketball and baseball programs have almost killed all three programs. It takes a high level of incompetence to pull off that rare feat, but Hamilton did it. Bravo you incompetent fool.

I guess... youre right on J.Rich and McRae (I can actually remember a time when I groaned every time Jordy Mac had it. Feels like an eternity ago His improvement has been drastic.)

I honestly haven't seen that much development from Stokes. Sure hes probably better on the boards, but his offensive game still feels raw to me. Too raw for someone who's been around this long.
Maybe my original comment was exaggerated. Development hasnt been abysmal, but I expected some players to be a little further along than they are. Stokes just has me particularly frustrated.

Wow... I sat here watching the game dumb founded, wondering what the hell we are trying to do? Much like how I sat and watched the football team.. this is year 3 and we still looks the same, no improvement, looking lost half the game, we have no identity. I gave martin a pass last year cause maymon (sp?) Was out, now I see It wouldn't of mattered anyways. I hope to god this team and Martin get it together quick, cause if its like the last two years, wait till 3/4 of the season being over till they decide to play ball, then Martin needs to go..
