The big what if

Anything less than 5-7 which is decent probability and he is on hot seat.

If he goes 5-7 this year, and again next year... dare I say we are looking for a new coach? Honestly curious what everybody thinks.

If he goes 5-7 next year he will have done it with more talent than Dooley won 6 with in his first year. Dont need to go there.

Better everywhere but the QB position and jury is still out on the OL. Still, absolutely no excuse to not win 7-8 minimum.

we won't be looking for a new coach at 5-7 or even 4-8 , but we may be looking for a couple of new assistants.

I am wondering how good our oline coach is as our offensive line has underperformed the last couple of years and now 2 of them are going to be starting in the NFL AS ROOKIES

6-6, I won't be "happy" but I can accept it provided we show some potential. 5-7, the bulbs are getting thrashed. 4-8, I am sleeping on the floor or couch.

If Butch goes 5-7 this year then 4-8 next year, I bet we see a Cuonzo type departure. It all depends on the scenario.

He only had them for one year. He needs 2 more in my opinion. It's been said that our OL last year did not fit CBJ's scheme. We had some huge bodies, CBJ wants them a little lighter and quicker. I want to see how they perform against Utah State compared to Missouri and Vandy.

If we go 5-7 with a healthy team (big caveat there), Butch Jones just simply isn't the guy that will get us to where we want to go.

He'll be our Zook.

I like Butch. But if works out like it did in Alabama I'd be cool with it.

I don't get posts like this at all.

How has firing coaches worked out for us so far? Well, how has keeping them around when it was obvious they weren't going to win anything worked out? Name for us all the coaches who got fired that didn't deserve it. Name for us the coach that got fired who would have won big otherwise.

Also, I know the folks here like to pretend Butch took over a worse situation than anybody else, but I can't think of another situation where the coach gets paid 3 million a year and the fanbase is expected to be happy with back-to-back losing seasons. To some observers, it would appear he's hit a goldmine. Just think about it...last year he got to blame Dooley, this year he gets to blame inexperience, and then next year, the excuse will probably be a freshman quarterback. The guy is looking at pocketing over 10 millions before most of you guys expect any significant accomplishments on the field.

Kinda like Gerry Dinardo at LSU. What, did he have four or five years?

With ya OF.

You're right about disapointment. The only year I can remember where I wasn't disapointed atleast once was 98. Enjoy the wins. Gripe, b%tch, moan, kick stuff when we lose but in a day or two get over it. (Except 96 memphis...aint ever getting over that one).

WE was robbed and the replay proved it. Elbow down!

Anyway, we have gator posters on this site that are more supportive than some of our Vol "fans". Shame our fans are afraid to believe for fear of losing internet cred.

Didn't realize how many 12 yr. old girls posted on VN. :birgits_giggle:

What if he doesn't win 11 games in 2019??

What then?

Damn this place is full-on CRAZY!!

IMO, if we go 5-7, there will be staff changes. Not Butch, but displeasure will be rampant and heads will roll.

All those coaches who built new houses in Knoxville know the importance of a bowl game. Stakes are high and getting higher.

Going 5-7 and losing to Vandy would signal a pretty significant step backwards for CBJ. If those were to happen some of the assistant coaches are going to have to be seriously reevaluated.

Going 5-7 in 2015 puts all of the coaches on the hot seat.

Now if we happen to have serious injury problems then maybe some passes can be given.

Would I lose faith in CBJ if we go 5-7 and lose to Vandy again? Not fully but I would seriously question his hiring of his assistants.
Didn't you condemn me to torment for suggesting Jones should be on a hot seat if he doesn't win at least six this year?

He'll be better at QB... guaranteed. In Dooley's 1st year he had two QB's on the roster... neither of whom had ever even taken a practice snap at UT. Jones will have had 3 years to sign and coach up a QB.

I say this because I was talking with some neighbors (Auburn & Miami fans)

They kept asking me what if Butch has another losing season. I really didn't respond as I believe we get to 7 wins including our bowl game.

But,As rational as we are and how urgent we are to win. What if we have a losing season, What if we lose to the hated commodores. Will you still have faith in butch or will you be wanting answers.

Difference is Butch is recruiting at an elite level. Even if he turns out to be not the best x/o coach, the talent he will have amassed will win on its own in a few years.

I say don't get too caught up in the W/L's at this point but focus on how the team plays. The wins will come if Butch's effort on the field is equal to his efforts off the field.

If the team plays well then it wins six. There are at least 6 games on the schedule vs teams with less talent. Daj says 8. In either event, the team won't be playing well if they continue to lose to teams with less talent.

With some key injuries, which are high probabilities, is it not hard to fathom a 5 win season? This schedule is pretty brutal. Would that be on coaching considering the lack of talent in the depth chart?

Nope. I know that myth gets thrown around quite a bit but talent alone doesn't win and it certainly doesn't win championships alone.

If he continues to recruit well while losing then the best solution is to go coach hunting. UT missed on high profile hires the last two times in part because the program and roster were in such dismal states. A solid roster would enable UT to make that big splash hire.

All of this of course assumes I am wrong and Jones fails. I believe coaches who focus on execution are the ones that win and continue to win. That seems to be Jones' focus.
