The big what if

7-5, 8-4 IF 1) the O line gels and has chemistry even as young as they are and 2) our D line just stays healthy (BIG ???). I think our LB's and DB's will play well. Anything other than this and we're .500.

If we are .500 or less, big deal. It will suck, but big deal. Gotta remember where we're trying to climb out of and it wouldn't mean Butch isn't doing things right. I'm looking more forward to years 3 and 4. We would be bat$h!+ crazy to be putting Butch on the hot seat regardless of what happens this season. It's only year 2 folks. We've cleaned up the trainwreck and just now putting newer and better cars back on the track. It takes a while.

With some key injuries, which are high probabilities, is it not hard to fathom a 5 win season? This schedule is pretty brutal. Would that be on coaching considering the lack of talent in the depth chart?

Only UT has key injuries? Where specifically do you say there is a lack of talent on the depth chart compared to say... Vandy, Mizzou, or UK?

We all want and need 6-6 and a bowl game.... reality is we could certainly do it, but if we go 5-7 and show improvement throughout the season and play opponents close and tough, Butch should be able to sell this to the '15 recruiting class we are assembling now and then next year we will start to make some serious noise. Each year of improving, the players and recruits will buy in and by '16 we will be whippin dey azz.....

If we have key injuries at inopportune times we could easily go 4-8 or 3-9. We just don't have overall depth yet. And, rightly or wrongly he will be on hot seat. Doesn't matter how well recruiting. Doesn't matter if not winning. He's paid 3 million per year to win, not recruit well. And, not win every other year but every year and he knows that. Just ask him.

I don't get posts like this at all.

How has firing coaches worked out for us so far? Well, how has keeping them around when it was obvious they weren't going to win anything worked out? Name for us all the coaches who got fired that didn't deserve it. Name for us the coach that got fired who would have won big otherwise.

Also, I know the folks here like to pretend Butch took over a worse situation than anybody else, but I can't think of another situation where the coach gets paid 3 million a year and the fanbase is expected to be happy with back-to-back losing seasons. To some observers, it would appear he's hit a goldmine. Just think about it...last year he got to blame Dooley, this year he gets to blame inexperience, and then next year, the excuse will probably be a freshman quarterback. The guy is looking at pocketing over 10 millions before most of you guys expect any significant accomplishments on the field.

Just so you know CBJ salary is near the bottom of the SEC.

Difference is Butch is recruiting at an elite level. Even if he turns out to be not the best x/o coach, the talent he will have amassed will win on its own in a few years.

Recruiting alone is not enough. CBJ has to prove he can coach up all of this talent. I think he will. I am all for CBJ. I am not sold on the OC and DC at all. Hopefully they all work out.

So what would you say if he went 5-7 for two more years?

I won't abandon ship at 5-7. Cuz likely UT will play teams close and their would still be 1 "upset" just as before.

I say this because I was talking with some neighbors (Auburn & Miami fans)

They kept asking me what if Butch has another losing season. I really didn't respond as I believe we get to 7 wins including our bowl game.

But,As rational as we are and how urgent we are to win. What if we have a losing season, What if we lose to the hated commodores. Will you still have faith in butch or will you be wanting answers.

To begin with lets be realistic. We are starting a bunch of young freshman players. We had the #1 toughest schedule in football last year and the #3 toughest this year. I would be happy with 6-6 and a bowl game this year and the extra practice days that would benefit us greatly for next year. We should have higher caliber QBs next year, so 2015-2016 should be measureable seasons. The only thing to be ill at CBJ this year is if we lose to CANDY. WE SHOULD NEVER LOSE TO CANDY! If we unfortunately remember coach Doolittle almost lost to candy in Knoxville which would have made it three against us.

Its only yr 2. I personally didn't expect a complete turnaround that quickly. Give the guy some time to bring in and develop his players. JMO

We are looking for progress, especially with the youngins. While disappointing, you have to look at all factors to include injuries, players quitting on Coaches, play calling, luck, etc for the whole picture. One thing is for sure, CBJ Staff are great recruiters and motivators!

I expect to win 7 or more with a very young, inexperienced team though!

Another losing season wouldn't thrill me to say the least but it also wouldn't make me lose faith in Butch. We are one of the youngest teams in CFB. We also have one of the toughest schedules in CFB. Most of all we are replacing BOTH lines.

Butch has proven he can coach. USCjr and UGA is proof of that imo. Butch has more than proven he can recruit. Any level headed fan knows that he has got to be given the time he needs to restore us back to where we belong. It will happen but its not going to be this year. Kiffin and Dooley crashed and burned our program. Its going to take Butch at least another year or two to get us contending.

Patience is tough but very necessary. We are heading in the right direction but we still got a ways to go.

Yup, give the man time. If we aren't winning in three years, start to really question if the man can coach at this level and his assistants. Rebuilding jobs take more than two years. Maybe these coaches can't coach, maybe they can, but I say give them at least four years to find out.

Spot on..

The 2015 season almost has to have a bowl game (pending no crazy injuries).

The record isn't going to sway me too much one way or the other, unless something crazy like 2-10 shook out. But, even then, I want to see us getting better as the year goes on. We were doing that last season until Worley went down. We are ridiculously young this season.

2015 is the year where I would like to see us in almost every game and realistically looking at 8 or so wins. I think we have every thing on track to do that, IF IF IF we develop a solid QB.

If we have another losing season I will still stand strong behind Butch and our football team. Fact is, we are not in a good situation with our offensive/defensive lines. You can put A LOT of that on Dooley for his lack of recruiting in the trenches, and it's an area Butch and staff are working hard to address. It's a lot easier for a skill player to contribute early to a team than a lineman due to overall strength and physical readiness to step up to the college game. We got two new freshmen O lineman that look to be able to contribute and help us this year fortunately with Jashon and Coleman, and got some good ones committed for 2015, but it's gonna take a little time to get our lines back to elite SEC caliber. I'd look for McKenzie to come in and make an impact from day one next year, but players of his caliber are few and far between. Most need the benefits of a solid year of a college level strength and conditioning program to be game ready and really make a positive impact.

With the very difficult schedule this year, I do not expect us to be favored in more than 5 games this year, so anything better will require us to upset someone. I certainly think that is possible, and hope so, but it is not time to down on the coaches if that doesn't happen. There should be some improvement in 2015, and much better by 2016.

Pretty tough place to be coach. Everybody and their brother is predicting 5-7, some more, some less. Yet, the question is posed "do we lose faith at 5-7"?

Maybe that's why they pay the man $3 million, fan him, and feed him grapes.

It's the 4th lowest in the SEC

SEC head coaching salaries, post Sumlin, Malzahn and Freeze raises - Saturday Down South

It should actually be lower than Pinkel's.

Not according to Business Insider but be that as it may, whatever, it is still one of the highest in the country. Three million or 4.8 million it is still a lot of money and he knows he is expected to win. And, if he does, if he starts beating Saban, or Malzahn he will be paid more than they.

What if Hitler had the A-bomb? What if saban had turned bamer down? What if newton had chosen another school over the barn? What if the sun doesn't rise tomorrow ?
What would the insurance companies do if it weren't for "what if" ? Living life wondering what if is questionable.
What if the young Vols shock the world(?)!

Why is a tree good? Why is a sunset good? Why are boobs good?

So what would you say if he went 5-7 for two more years?

Pretty Simple

If that were to happen he better win a NATIONAL FREAKING CHAMPIONSHIP in 2016 or run him out of town.

I actually think this is a pivotal year for CBJ, needs to improve over last year's record, otherwise, he's just like Derek Dooley entering year 3. Say he's 10-14 entering year three. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY here will be interested in year 3 being another losing season.

There will be no hotseat for Butch Jones anytime soon. Even if he were to go 5-7 this year, he's still safe. I'd say he'll have things turned around before that seat gets even a little warm. Recruits love him. Everything else will fall into place with time.

I guarantee you, your opinion will change if you fumble around and lose to teams you shouldn't, especially Vandy and Florida and Mizzou. There's losing, and then there's losing like you lost against Florida last year where you looked like complete clowns.

Honestly I hope he wins, Ideally what I would like to see is

2014 6-6/7-5 All rational fans know this could be a tough year and we could be looking at 5-7 anything lower should have the seat on Fire.
2015 7-5/8-4
2016 9-3/10-2 Out of excuses in 2016
2017 the deck should be stacked, Talent and depth should no longer be a problem and we should be making a Championship run if these are the right coaches for it.

I also hope that Dave Hart was smart enough to put a clause in the contract stating that any mention comparing the Vols to Nazi Soldiers or Bamboo should warrant immediate termination with no buyout.
