I actually think Phil has a pretty good on-screen persona. I think he's excelled at his analyst role. I certainly don't think he's been pushing to get a coaching job. He must like it.

Please, please, perhaps you have forgotten the Louisville, and N.D. feelers (he sent out) and his attendance at the coaching convention where he could try and smell out something, unsuccessfully of course. Maybe PF could hire you as his p.r. person.

At that time he was trying to play the old "I am somebody" role, smarting from his rejection of poor performance at UT. Those rejections he has suffered, UT, and trying to get the ND and Louisville jobs, should serve him well in future years if he ever realizes he is an ordinary person of ordinary ability and will have to take what he can get, a rebuilding coaching job or lower division, or just sail off into the six million dollar sunset. Pretty simple really.
