The Braves Thread

How do they let the #5 pick in the draft walk just so they can sign a guy drafted in what round 25ish? That doesn't make much since to me.

If Carter doesn’t sign then they lose that money in this years pool. So can’t sign other late round guy as well. Braves will get a compensation pick for this next year but IMO it’s stupid you can’t do physicals.

You don’t have to share medicals as an nba draft prospect

You probably don’t have to share them as an nfl prospect either

How on earth could you compel them to share medicals prior to being drafted?

You can evaluate before you sign them. That’s what happened here.

There's a difference in sharing your 8th grade hernia exam and not being able to perform a physical on a player prior to investing millions of dollars in them.

If Stewart blew his elbow out in middle school, I'm not suggesting he have to disclose that explicitly, but a team of doctors giving him a once over would probably recognize any scarring and become curious. The fact that you cant even be examined is ludicrous.

The NBA and NFL certainly gives you a THOROUGH exam as part of the rookie combine. It is jokingly known as the "most in-depth doctor's appointment ever".

Bingo. They’re not part of the players association until they’re drafted so they can’t be forced into anything.

You may want to read up on the subject.

Educate me. I came looking for the answer. No need to be snarky about it. :dunno:

I didn’t bring up 8th grade hernia exams.

Teams have no right to medical information before selecting players. The vast majority of players comply to physicals but they do not have to.

The team can run them through a physical of their choosing before entering into a contract. That’s when the issue with Stewart was discovered. It doesn’t take place before drafts because players are not employees or unionized at that point.

The hernia comment was just for dramatic effect relative to my surprise, not meant to goad you into an argument.

Your explanation makes more sense, now. ZJC said teams can't perform physicals before the draft, leading me to believe they can't even request them. The idea that it is optional for the player to comply is more believable, if not still a little outlandish as a practice.

I guess they figure someone will draft them if they have the talent, so what reason do they have to comply. Conversely, as the team front office, it would be a red flag to me if players refused to comply. However, depending on how common that practice is, it may quickly eliminate a large population of draftable players to take a hard line stance on the matter.

Thanks for the explanation.

I think Machado said he was only interested in playing short. I can't find the exact quote, but it was a couple of weeks ago I believe

That’s fine. Camargo is probably better at it.

We aren’t signing him long term so I don’t care about his preferences and I doubt we pay the price for a rental.

Getting Machado would be nice, but I would rather have a shutdown pen. I think we need two elite high strikeout guys for the 8th and 9th. I would move Viz to the 7th, and use Minter as the guy you bring in for high leverage situations against the teams best hitter especially if they are a lefty
