The Case for Eric Ainge

not according to some. Some people think if we can't play on New Years Day that we should just decline and skip the extra three weeks of practice we get.

I sure hope we have one by then. I'm nervous about the recruiting challenges we'll have based on this. We need a big name, top tier, well-proven OC to come in here. My fear is that Fulmer wants someone he can control and someone he won't have to worry about taking his job. I hope there is enough 'outside' influence to make sure we get what we need.

I was just sitting here thinking. I wonder how much of our desire for Ainge stems from the fact that we want him to play like we think he can play. Do we hope Ainge plays because of his potential? Clausen has obviously done more on the field and in practice.

I mean, we all want to see Ainge to hope he can improve for next year but based on his play does he deserve to be the starter? I'll be honest, I think I have pulled for Ainge at times because he has the stronger arm and has more potential (and he has two more years in the program).

My whole point is that we can't gamble on Crompton being the miracle boy. We have no clue if he'll pan out. He could be one of those types who heal but never play the same again. I just think he needs more time in. He's clearly got SOMETHING in that gray matter since he walked in last year and played great for a guy learning the system. It's there but someone needs to get it back. Sitting on the bench pontificating the meaning of life doesn't really help get it back either. I'm not wanting another cycle of who's better. I just think we have to think about next year. We have to have depth and experience in whatever ways we can get it. We can't get experience doing reps in the Spring. Obviosly Spring Practice was a facade in the coaches making us think we had a team that would take us to a January bowl game. I think we have more to lose in the future by not covering our bases. Let him play longer and if all hell breaks loose pull him if we look to potentially be losing the game. I think with Foster and Briscoe in there as the future as well perhaps he can get some rhythm.

I think that's what happened today.

I've always been an Ainge supporter, but I think that RC should finish out the season. At this point, Clausen can handle the defenses of Vandy and UK and the bowl game if we go.

Right now, the coaches have to do what's in the their best interest and that's get to a bowl game.

At this point, it's pretty obvious that Ainge isn't seeing the defense correctly. It might do him more harm than good to keep letting him make the same mistakes on the field. If he's not ready, he's not ready. Time to protect him until we can get someone in to work with him and give him a tune up.

I agree that experience can be a good teacher, but not at the expense of us losing to Vandy or UK. This program can't take another hit like that.

I agree OWB. Ainge may be the QB of the future, but we can't play for anything other than the next game.

I hope you're right. If that is Fulmer's choice, I hope a new OC will make Spring Practice worthwhile. Obviously something between the injury and the first game something happened. If it was an injury then we have to brace for Crompton as well. We better recruit a good one this year if they'll come. That's why we need a big name in here to bring the good ones in here.

Anyone have Schaeffer's cell phone number?

or the next QB rotation....anyone taking bets on how many rounds we go in QB switching until the end of the season?

Ainge's four first-half possessions netted 47 yards and zero points. Clausen's three possessions netted 171 yards and 14 points.
