The Coach is failing

It's quite evident that our guys are poorly coached on zone offense, but with the sloppy passing of our guards would we be able to execute if we knew how to attack a zone defense?

You shouldn't have to coach players to penetrate with the pass or dribble. It's basic. Todays player would rather jack up a 3, though. As did I at times, actually.

Like pl3 said, the schematics of attacking a zone defense shouldn't need to be taught at the collegiate level. It is elementary. Outside of learning specific plays that your coach wants to run against a zone defense, you shouldn't need to learn it all over again. I was taught how to execute and attack a zone defense in elementary school.

One word, Indianapolis/:hi:

And that Indy team would've beaten this year's Peay team. Again, the NCAA fallout had a lot to do with last year's team. Beat Pitt and Villanova, sweep Vandy and then lose to some mid majors and a horrible team in Charlotte.

Buzz Martin failed again. Couldn't get Miller back into the game after he was killing them early.

You can't have it both ways. This team has a terrible roster compared to last year and there is no one to blame but Pearl, his staff, and their NCAA trouble. This program is still in the wake of what happened last year. I see the same uninspired play from less talented players. You can't really polish a turd unless you ate some gold. It is way too early to hang this on Martin.

I'm not having it both ways. Pearl recruited most of this roster, but Martin is on the sideline now. This isn't the same team that was playing their asses off in Maui in my opinion. We've become selfish and lazy on defense and have been exposed in the last two games as a below average team. It's up to the coaching staff to prepare these players and they seem to have a good first half and then can't adjust after the half after the other team adjusts. That is coaching.

We're not a below average team against mid major teams. I call BS on that one.

Right now, we are 3-6 with 1 win coming against Chaminade. I'd say that's below average or bordering on sucking.

We are 2-3 against mid majors so far.

I don't get caught up in the mid major thing as much as some of you. I look at the talent on the floor. CoC had a pg last year that could have played anywhere, and had us outbasketballtalented at almost every position on the floor last night. We have 4* all over the place that would be pushed at Rhodes College for PT right now.

There are more talented basketball players coming out every year. It's grown exponentially in the last 20 years. There are plenty of kids who can play ball at these schools.

So having said that -- if you were on the bench and you were the assistant to the assitant to the assistant head coach and you watched us casually passing it around the perimeter and you had an unstoppable force like Maymon inside would you sit on your hands and say "Oh well those guys should already know how to penetrate - draw people to them and then pass off" or would you call a timeout or scream from the sidelines and reinforce this basic premise?

If your response is - "I just like to watch" then you should be sitting next to our 12 - 15coaches/trainers/managers/entourage.

In addition to being outplayed by Austin Peay and C o C,
we appear to be getting out coached. I am not in the huddles during timeouts nor am I sitting with the coaches but I don't like what I see.

I continue to pull for Quonzo and company but if this was daughter's middle school coach I would be concerned with the floor adjustments and coaching.

Nah. He just lost to a Charlotte team on the road that went 1-12 to finish the season. His team was also blown out by College of Charleston at home. The Oakland loss was also at home. Comparing miseries should really start after the Pitt win. Everything kind of unraveled from then on. That includes now. This is also a much less talented team than last year's.

Because Martin couldn't keep the decent recruits that Bruce had almost committed until he was fired. The talent on this team is atleast half to blame on Martin. Couldn't keep Harris or Hopson which we needed his senior leadership more than production.

This has to be the third or fourth dumbest thing stated in this thread.

Why? He didn't recruit anyone worth a scholarship. He didn't put any effort into trying to keep Hopson or harris. All I'm saying is he wasn't restricted from rolling up his sleeves and going to work hard.

I'm assuming the staff was trying to set plays, but also telling them to penetrate when they can. I've never been in a huddle that worked any differently. You still have to have the players that can and want to. We have some that can, and have some that want to. We just don't have the combination.

Both of those recruits did not qualify academically. Harris said tons of times he would leave if he was going to be drafted high enough. He did roll up his sleeves and work. Also all of his recruits are better than Mcbee who was given a scholly by Pearl

And Harris said tons of times along with his daddy that Bruce was gonna be the number one reason to consider coming back. But like I said half think he was gone regardless and half says he stays if Bruce stays

I think you need to give CM a break. He's made mistakes and will continue to. Every week, coaches make mistake after mistake.

If you know basketball, you realize that the roster is loaded with supposed athletes that are long and athletic, but limited on basketball players. I don't care what rating CM's recruits get. As long as they don't look like our highly rated prospects in Cam, Hall and Wool, I'm good with it.

You keep posting we lost 75% of our scoring and thats not true. Do you think posting incorrect data over and over makes it so. Are you a politician?

I'm not a politician but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn last night.. Seriously, get out your calculator, do the math and prove my statement wrong. I may be off by 1 or 2 percentatge points. Go for it.

This was epically retarded.

Did not stay at a Holiday Inn...but, watching the D in the second half really showed there was a lack of intensity. As well, no signs of trying to stop the dribble drive. The team does not play to deny the lanes....it will continue to cost them as the season rolls on.

That being said...UT had 20 fouls vs 7 against CoC. However, many of those fouls I saw as collisons, and out of position/recovery reactions by the Vols.....not attributed to aggressive D, which I would enjoy seeing.

From what I calculated we lost 78% of our scoring from last year, but hasn't hurt us anyway since we are averaging 8 points more this year. From a shooting perspective, I would take this year players over last year(Harris is he one exception obviously), unfortunately our defense is pathetic. What has confused me is Martin has emphasized defense from every report I have seen, so not sure what that says about his coaching. Either way he is here for at least 2 years, if the arena is half full again we will know whether this hire has worked or not.

I've been following volnation for years but finally decided to join...

Idk about ccm.....however I do feel (feel free to argue with me no this)that we should of kept pearl and take the two year post ban....at least we would still be competive we would of more than likely have Harris and hopson still bc the draft woulda a come and went by the time the NCAA ruling cAme out...and it looks like sewing make the tourney Neways this year.....

Ppl that are saying would pearl do ne better with this squad maybe yes maybe no but we orally woulda had hopson and Harris on this squad

Also ppl that are arguing bout how pearl did last year....well there were a lot of things goin on outside the court let's not forget the five year previous to last year

Idk how ccm will pan out....I guess were goin to have to see how he recruits, if we get that star out of Memphis I'd say that's a pretty good start
