the difference of a home run hire

Gotta disagree here. Urban was National Coach of Year in 2003 and led Utah to a 12-0, BCS Bowl season in 2004He was as big of a homerun as it gets. His name was in the discussion at Notre Dame as well at the time.

Utah wasn't in the Pac 12...so he was a rising mid-major hire...

Kinda like Butch

:)

He may not have been "home run" but he did some awesome turn arounds at Bowling Green and Utah. So he at least showed some outstanding potential.

Yeah...but wouldn't have met the standards of this thread.

:)

There are a few known ones and quite a few more that haven't emerged. Some that have that potential never emerge because they never meet the right opportunity.

Spurrier was an up and comer... not a homerun when UF hired him away from Duke. Saban basically escaped from Mich St before being fired then landed in LSU. Meyer could have been the same as Dan Hawkins when UF hired him away from Utah. Pete Carroll could have been more like Mike Sherman... Sherman I believe actually had more NFL success.

Jones may end up being a "homerun". No one knows yet. Out there somewhere right now though... someone is the next "homerun" in the making.

Yeah, Saban escaped before being fired after one of the best seasons in Michigan State history.

Yeah, Saban escaped before being fired after one of the best seasons in Michigan State history.

9-2 season with two blowout losses to Purdue and Wisconsin...following seasons of 6-5-1...6-6...and 7-5. Bowl record of 0-3 in which the losses were by a combined 85 points.

Double hire at best.

:)

Were you following the situation there at the time? Do you remember it? He was in trouble and one season wasn't going to be enough to get him off the hook completely. Prior to that last season, he was barely above .500.

Yes he escaped to LSU who had not been consistently good for a long time. He took them from being a hot/cold program with some really ugly bad years to a NC caliber program. P

You're so right. People were really calling for his head after that win over #1 OSU in Columbus.

Nice evasion... and I AM right.

It's not an evasion. You implied he was on the hot seat in '99, when they finished in the top ten, and then changed it to '98, right after one of the biggest wins in Michigan State history. I'm sure Saban was really feeling the heat.

GatorBill could settle this once and for all...he's a big Sparty fan.

Good god, some of you feel so damned threatened anytime another coach or school is given respect for their accomplishments! To those saying they would take our staff over one that just won a national championship, you are severely drunk on the Kool aide or in full-blown denial.

Just for the record and speaking only for myself, the point wasn't that the other coaches weren't good. They are very good and have proven successful beyond a doubt. The point, for me anyway, is that people continue to use their success as proof that Tennessee doesn't try to make home run hires and is simply okay with staying mediocre so long as the money comes in. Both are wrong from my point of view. We have tried several times to make that home run hire and have drained the AD accounts as a result. By the time we got around to firing Dooley, there wasn't anyone out there with an NC ring waiting to come home like there was back in '77.

Several times? I'd say maybe once. Kiffin was the only one of our hires that was even remotely in demand at comparable programs. I guess we tried with Strong, but that's pretty much it.

Yep. A home run hire makes improvements in the program immediately. He gets fans excited to attend the games. Recruiting is top notch with a home run hire, consistently ranking in top ten or better. He should improve in the win loss record. They also should not just get to a bowl game, but dominate when there. Hey...a lot like what Butch Jones is doing. CBJ was a home run hire and I didn't realize it at the time he was hired. Thanks OP for making me look at this more closely.

I don't think he accepts your gratitude. :)

I have to admit, I came in and searched my name!!

Saban was not on the hot seat when he left MSU. He left because the President of MSU at that time was a douchewaffle who thought that football should be placed farther down the list of important things at the university. He wanted the football program to be less important. And he was pretty successful because after saban left we turned into a downward spiraling rocket.

New administration has it right. Football, basketball, all sports work hand in hand with academics. Its a nice culture there right now.

37 likes for someone saying they wouldn't trade Butch for Saban or Harbaugh. Smh

I wouldnt want Harbaugh even if I were a michigan fan. He is a loose cannon, and there will be a major problem before he leaves um. Not sure what, or when, but its just a matter of time.
