the difference of a home run hire

So where does Florida fall in this? When they hired Urban, he wasn't a homerun hire...did they get credit for one after the fact when he won two NCs there? Muschamp was a hot name assistant but not a home run and now they have Mcelweiner. If Butch ends up winning a championship do we get to call him a homerun hire? Then we'd have to rewrite this thread. :pinch:

A few years from now Butch Jones will be Known as one of the greatest homerun hires of all time. This guy can rec ruit with the best of them and knows how to build a program.

Urban's a great coach and that's a fact. No one was coming to UT post Kiffin. Strong and Gundy turned us down when we hired Butch. I don't think anyone could have done better than Butch in recruiting since he came here. I'm not saying Butch is in UM's league but I do believe that he will prove to be a home run hire. JMO

Yeah, it would've been awesome to hire Gruden if we could. However, I think we got the biggest steal in Butch. The man can coach and is becoming an elite recruiter. When we start winning big again (which we will), it won't be long before an NFL team comes calling

But, but, Tennessee isn't committed to greatness. We would never hire a former player, heisman runner up, successful coach with a NC trophy. We just wouldn't!

Let's reopen the "Could Gruden recruit" debate, that will be fun!

How many times do we have to go through this?

1. There are limited "home run hires" out there, and timing, location and luck play into the ability to get one of them.

2. Firing a coach who has won a national championship, has a top winning percentage and is one year removed from an appearance in the conference championship game is enough to make any big name coach question whether this is where he might want to come.

3. Being unable to get a knockout centerfold candidate, Mike Hamilton did the next best thing. He got a (perceived) home run coaching staff. A disciple of Pete Carroll on offense with proven assistants on offense. The best recruiter, legal or otherwise, in the business, and the creator of the Tampa two defense. No one could anticipate the train wreck that followed.

4. Following that, with time running out, Hamilton hires the Anti-Kiffin, who then spends the next three years setting fire to every dumpster in Knoxville. Oh, and walking away with the entire athletic department surplus in the process.

5. So exactly how were we supposed to get this home run hire instead of Butch?

Butch seems to recruit as well as a young Phil Fulmer. His players run through walls for him and he plays a sexy brand of football. Who was going to make things better, faster?

Can't we get past this? Pete Carroll is not leaving the Seahawks to coach UT.

I just think it's funny that everyone blames Mike Hamilton for the Kiffin debacle. At the time, everyone loved Kiffin and the energy he brought in. It's what everyone wanted: a young, offensive minded coach that could recruit. Like Hamilton could foresee that he would leave a year later for the USC job. Some people

Are you saying it was a home run hire? How dare you!

Personally, I think Butch is doing a better job recruiting than Gruden would. Butch does a great job at recruiting elite talent that also has their heads on straight, unlike Kiffin who would recruit stars no matter their background, which ended up killing that class. Most either got kicked off, failed, or transferred (or arrested).

He may not have been "home run" but he did some awesome turn arounds at Bowling Green and Utah. So he at least showed some outstanding potential.

I do believe Butch is in that league at this point in his career. It boggles the mind at what Butch is accomplishing here.

Looks like suckeyes going to win nc n 3rd yr of urban...

Just really shows you the difference of big time hires n taking chances.. thank god Michigan went big I can't take the suckeye fans n urban running his mouth.

A great coaching staff does make a difference.

This is not a debate on situations TN vs. OS. Its about what a great coach can do for a program.

Gotta disagree here. Urban was National Coach of Year in 2003 and led Utah to a 12-0, BCS Bowl season in 2004He was as big of a homerun as it gets. His name was in the discussion at Notre Dame as well at the time.

He also turned around Bowling Green before that. They were 2-9 the year before he got there and he made them 8-3 then 9-3 before he went to Utah.

How many "homerun" hire coaches are out there? .

There are a few known ones and quite a few more that haven't emerged. Some that have that potential never emerge because they never meet the right opportunity.

Spurrier was an up and comer... not a homerun when UF hired him away from Duke. Saban basically escaped from Mich St before being fired then landed in LSU. Meyer could have been the same as Dan Hawkins when UF hired him away from Utah. Pete Carroll could have been more like Mike Sherman... Sherman I believe actually had more NFL success.

Jones may end up being a "homerun". No one knows yet. Out there somewhere right now though... someone is the next "homerun" in the making.

Strangely though... he has struggled at previous stops to build/sustain a talented roster. At UF... he just signed way too many "talented" thugs and idiots. His ineffective recruiting left Muschamp in a hole.

osu are on there way to dynasty standing. I look for them to take at least the next 2 probably 3 NC. College football is about money and OSU has it.
