The Downtown Grill & Brewery Postgame Report

I like Tabb and his toughness but when he is on the offensive end its basically four on five. Hopefully he gained some confidence with his stroke last night. Against the better teams and come tourney time I think our point needs to put some fear in the opponent. That is why I asked this question. I also agree Maze needs to open it up more.

What's interesting about Tabb is he has moments where he makes a drive to the basket that you would never expect. I think he falls into the same category as a lot of our guards, he can get to the rim so if he could gain some confidence that could be a big boost offensively for him. He could slash it to the rim, and either finish it up, kick it out, or hit Tyler/Wayne/Brian down low. I guess I feel like the more he plays against Maze in practice, and the more he gets game time experience, the better I think we'll see his offense become. I mean, I'm with Hat, the fact that he hit such a huge 3 late in the game speaks a lot about his development as an offensive player.

Also, does anyone else think that if Brian Williams would just learn to keep his hands ready, and just go straight up to the basket without going down, or using a bounce, that he would start scoring with a lot more frequency?

alright, how much of chism's night do you attribute to chism being "that guy" vs. the match up presented by a smaller Marquette?

i do agree 100% that that's the kind of game (not necessarily stat wise, but presence for sure) he has to have for us to be successfu........

just not convinced he can do that w/out the benefit of a favorable matchup.......

I think the crowd last night was in the 9K range.

It looked empty on TV.

The upper level looked empty. I would have been there but my sons team played last night. I got to watch the last half. Chism really stepped up. I can't help but attribute that win to their lack of depth though. We lose that game against a similar team with depth.

I know he is young, but all Negedu has shown me so far is that he is willing to come off the bench and give three or four fouls per game.

thus far, the disappearing act has been more prevalent than the appearing act.

I'm thinking the favorable matchup helped immensely, since he didn't really ever have to guard anyone or deal with fouls.

Chism has to figure out how to minimize his fouls. He's too timid at times because he doesn't want to pick up a foul. If he can figure that out, he will be much more effective in the second half of games.

He was fun to watch last night in the 2nd half but he could have very easily been in foul trouble again last night. He came dangerously close to picking up a ridiculously cheap foul 18-20 feet from the basket at least 3 times in the first half. On a different night, with a different crew, I think that really could have changed that game.

All that to say that I couldn't agree more with you on the disappearing vs. appearing so far this season for Wayne.

"2. Loved the matchup zone. This team's length makes it a useful change of pace defense."

I wonder if that was borrowed from the LVs. It's been out there that CPS showed CBP a matchup zone.

I didn't notice any extra jump balls, so he must have learned it from a mens coach.

You might want to watch him more closely. The reason he's fouling is that he's helping out someone else who got beat or lost their man. And you can't blame a guy for being aggressive - when he fouls someone, they ain't making that shot.

Negedu is my favorite player - I love focusing on him when he's in the game. He doesn't have a lot of offensive ability, but he hustles like crazy, plays with a ton of energy, stays poised, and doesn't try to do more than he can. With some development he'll be a Tennessee fan favorite.

Agreed. He's unlikely to be the flashy ESPN type, but he'll be the kind I want on my squad.

I need to watch him more closely then......All I know is the kid is a physical specimen, and I agree he will get much better as he matures....Hustling is a great start.

I was there tonight, and yes the crowd was not the greatest, but how bad was Vandy? I mean this is in Nashville and they didn't have anybody there. I liked what Wayne gave us tonight, but he needs to be that aggressive all the time.

I might be rooting for him more than most b/c I like his attitude, but I think he and the team need more minutes out of him now. Coach could start by giving him any minutes S. Pearl is getting right now.

I agree wholeheartedly. Pearl may be doing well in practice, but if it doesn't translate to the court it's no good.

At this point, I see Negedu as a bigger, stronger Stanley Asumnu who can shoot free throws reasonably well.

Lots of room (and time) for improvement, though.
