The Downtown Grill & Brewery Postgame Report

At this point, I see Negedu as a bigger, stronger Stanley Asumnu who can shoot free throws reasonably well.

Asumnu was a swing player who played a lot on the perimeter. He was a more of a long, bouncy guy who did his best work on the fast break.

Negedu is a strong, explosive post player who likely will only be on the perimeter if he's guarding in help Defense or bailing out someone who's picked up his dribble.

Hat made a good call early on - he's Donnell Harvey in UT orange. If you wanted to stay in the family, a shorter version of Duke Crews probably would be a close comparison.

1. Welcome back, Wayne. Tonight's performance is what this team needs out of Chism to be a factor in March.
2. Loved the matchup zone. This team's length makes it a useful change of pace defense.
3. Brian Williams has to be more aggressive in close. He's just too hesitant.
4. The fact Josh Tabb didn't hesitate to take the biggest shot of the game shows how far he's come offensively. Last year, he passes that ball right back out top.
5. Another solid night from Bobby Maze. He's doing a nice job of making my reservations about him look unfounded.
6. Renaldo Woolridge is certainly fearless offensively. It would be nice to see him attack the rim more often.
7. I don't know how the Hell Mike Ragsdale ended up in the front row behind Nessler and Dykes, but I'm sure the Knox County taxpayer footed the bill somehow.
8. Buzz Williams will be fired within four years. By then, he will have crashed Marquette into the South Florida/St. John's nether regions of the Big East.
9. Tennessee's trips to Nashville continue to draw underwhelming crowds. I continue to think that annual trip is a waste of time.
10. Wesley Matthews is going to be a better pro than his dad. My guess is that he has the best NBA career of anyone on the floor tonight.

11. Loved the few times Scotty put it on the floor and drove to the rim

12. Negedu needs to play more minutes, i think he should see a few of Williams' minutes

13. Tyler Smith gets another quiet 14-17 points, if he continues this consistency all year plus the development of the young guys we will be in detroit in april

14. Josh Tabb needs to attack the basket more

15. Cameron Tatum needs to attack the basket more

16. Woolridge is better than Hopson

17. JP Prince is more important to this team than i thought

18. Would love to have Jajuan Smith in the backcourt with Bobby Maze this year

19. This team showed exactly the bounce back ability that great teams show in december

20. cant wait for the 2010-2011 basketball squad...

I really don't understand why Scotty doesn't take it to the hoop more. I think he could take it to the hoop on just about anyone (that block by James was SICK though). I'm certainly not judging the guy or throwing him under the bus, but he's been a pretty big disappointment so far for me. I'd love to see him have a breakout game.

except the one James turned away at the rim

12. Negedu needs to play more minutes, i think he should see a few of Williams' minutes

should probably take Pearl's minutes. BWill is reasonably productive, though offensively challenged

13. Tyler Smith gets another quiet 14-17 points, if he continues this consistency all year plus the development of the young guys we will be in detroit in april

IMO, Tyler has been awful thus far and appears to be seeking Degree of Difficulty points instead of hammering the short range jumper that's available to him all night long

14. Josh Tabb needs to attack the basket more

maybe

15. Cameron Tatum needs to attack the basket more

he also needs to find some stroke, then everyone could attack

16. Woolridge is better than Hopson

not a prayer this is correct

17. JP Prince is more important to this team than i
thought

agreed

18. Would love to have Jajuan Smith in the backcourt with Bobby Maze this year

immaterial. I'd like to have Bird on this squad, but it ain't happening.

19. This team showed exactly the bounce back ability that great teams show in december

Marquette was hardly a team upon which we can base sweeping pronouncements. We won a game against a team with no post presence whatsoever.

20. cant wait for the 2010-2011 basketball squad...

I was at the Brewery last night, but only made it to around 11pm. I needed some sleep, and to get away from the girl upstairs next to us that kept screaming "OH MY GOOOOOOOD OOOOHHH MAI GAHHHHHHD" every time she saw someone new. Caught the rest on the radio and at home.

I'll be glad to see us with a go-to spot up shooter.

You were obviously sitting upstairs. I considered killing that girl at least twice. Also considered executing the idiots who kept standing in front of the big TV.

Everyone talks about how Williams has improved, but he has not improved nearly as much as Tabb. Williams should of had a couple of easy baskets, but he either can't handle the pass or he starts dribbling, allowing the defense to converge. Chism can be a beast against teams like this, but against bigger teams like the two we've lost to he is nonexistent. I'm surprised Hat gave maze some love because he had some terrible passes which led to turnovers last night, but at least he can shoot a lot better than Ramar. I think this year we may actually peak at the right time!!

Yeah. We were over with a couple tables together against the wall behind the large couch. The large crowd was killing me. Couldn't hardly see the game or even think about hearing it. We could do both before their arrival. I ducked out early. One more beer would have hurt more than helped this morning.

I was at the table behind the couch that is parallel with the wall. We were obviously on each side of that screeching shrew. I was really rooting for her to fall down the steps at some point.

It was pretty awful. To make matters worse, I knew one of her friends. Even she was embarrassed by the debacle. Apparently they were in from a Christmas party with an open bar, which would have put me into a stupor rather than a screaming train wreck.

I think some of us are going to meet at the Brewery either before or after the game Saturday. Let me know if you're interested.

I may be able to do before. Despite my posted availability, the boss at my 2nd job has decided I should work at 4:30.

my only problem with the brewery is they'll run one free pool table and you have to pay for the other two :banghead2:

I'm ok with that. Less of a chance someone tries to rope me into playing pool all night.

Also, there's not room in there for 3 tables. They need 3 or so more feet on each side of those tables so that I don't move 100x a night so Todd McFrat can 'totally sink this shot, man.'

Scotty isn't strong enough to be effective taking it to the rim, but that can be said about several of our players. Looking at the strength and muscle definition of Hopson, Tatum, Williams and Woolridge and comparing them to the guys from Marquette they were matched up against, it isn't very hard to tell who has been in campus weight rooms for 3 or 4 years and who hasn't.

Hopson was able to beat his man on the first step several times last night, only to be unable to finish the play. That will come with strength and experience.

2. The zone looked good, particularly in light of the fact that our younger players got lost several times in man and we had no match for Mathews.

4. I agree. I thought we looked very good last night with Tabb and Maze on the court at the same time.

9. I couldn't tell how many of the empty seats were due to Vandy fans leaving early. The first two levels of the sidelines were full; the upper deck and endzones were sparsely populated. It didn't help that the SEC was hosting two BE schools who brought 12 fans between them.

10. Matthews was impressive. He was too quick for anyone bigger than him to handle, he was too strong for a guard to check, and he knows how to get the ball into the basket.

+1. Playing pool there is an impossible task anyway when it's crowded upstairs.

Maybe some GDIs shouldn't be hanging out around pool tables while others are playing? If you're in the area, you're gonna have to move. If you don't like it go to another part of the bar...where they aren't playing pool or darts.

What a shocking revelation, right?

You'd have a good point if you knew the layout of the bar. There are tables around one side of the pool tables, placed there by the bar, for people to sit and drink. No one is "hanging out around the pool tables" they are sitting enjoying some drinks and food at tables provided.

Also, there are no darts there.
