The End of Florida's Run

They may have but then they got stomped by a good team. Go look at Iowa's bowl history. They've beaten Flroida/Urban Meyer. They've beaten LSU/Les Miles. They've lost to Texas/Mack Brown by a field goal.

Last year, South Carolina piss pounded Tennessee and Iowa piss pounded South Carolina.

I don't like Iowa, I really don't. But Iowa is undefeated right now with Ricky Stanzi. I think 10-0 against Northwestern with Stanzi and losing 17-10 when the back up comes in proves that. It was the first quarter when he got hurt. Stanzi was tossing it all over Northwestern.

I don't think beating 2008 Tennessee proves a whole lot.

Haha. You're right.

It's just a lot of fans around here think SEC is so superior and I was pointing out how Iowa blew out the same team that blew out Tennessee.

Tennessee definitely lost to Wyoming so you're right, it proves nothing.

Still... South Carolina was considered decent last year and the Iowa killed them.

Like I said... Iowa has beaten Florida, LSU and South Carolina this decade. They aren't as bad as people think though. I hate to admit it because I will tell my friends how bad they are for struggling with Ark St. and N. Iowa. They still beat Penn State and barely lose to Ohio State with a back up. They play with their competition it seems.

Incorrect about Urban Meyer. They not only lost, they got crushed by a team led by Chris Leak. That game was 31-7 Florida at the start of the 4th.

I remember that LSU game. I think we all know what to make of Les Miles now. If he wins a game, it's only because of the sheer amount of talent he has on the field at all times. A moderately competent coach would have won multiple national titles by now. Still, Iowa needed a Flutie-esque hail mary to win that game.

Texas in 2006 was a pretty poor team by Longhorns standards.

And South Carolina? Transitive property? C'mon...

So you follow Iowa and all, but Kirk Ferentz has to be one of the most overrated coaches of the decade. If you have to luck your way into beating UNI and Arkansas State, you're simply not a good football team, I don't care what the record says.

I'm not an SEC homer, but I feel pretty good about the conference when it's stacked up next to the Big 10.

Actually Saban was the coach for that one. It was the year they didn't have a real QB.

You're right. Iowa beat Florida the year before Meyer showed up. They beat Zook. They did beat Florida though.

As for Texas, didn't Texas have 9 wins? Iowa was 6-6 and barely lost.

You're wrong about Kirk Ferentz though. Iowa State out recruits him every year and Iowa still competes. Their classes rank around 50th on average and he knocks off Joe Pa regularly and competes with Jim Tressel.

How can you be overrated when you win with crappy players?

He is on Notre Dames list and NFL teams have come to him the past few years to leave Iowa but he won't do it. Why would NFL coaches want an overrated coach?

My bad but still...

Why do people make excuses?

So LSU didn't have a quarterback... People are throwing Iowa under the bus for barely losing to Northwestern and Ohio State with a freshman that had thrown 3 passes prior to those two games. He was from a crappy 3 A school in Iowa. Nobody recruited him.

For the record, Tennessee and LSU both almost beat Florida/Alabama this year without a quarterback...

It will be near impossible going undefeated while there is a good chance two teams between the Big 10, Big East, Mountain West and Pac 10 will go undefeated every year. Now teams from the Mountain West and teams like Boise are being taken into consideration.

2 teams in the Pac 10 will not go undefeated under the current format. They play a round robin regular season.

Recruiting is part of being a coach. If he's getting out-recruited by Iowa State, he really, really sucks in a very important area. How do you know he's on ND's list? And I really don't believe he's been seriously contacted for an NFL position. Perhaps for OL coach, but not as a head coach.

Aaah, my bad if I explained it wrong. I didn't mean two teams would go undefeated in each conference. I meant two teams between all of the conferences. At this point, if there were two teams to go undefeated out of those conferences, I don't know if a one loss SEC team would go over them. Different times from teams going over Hawaii, Boise State, Utah etc.

Most can claim that... How many times has the Big Ten won meaningful non-conference games in the last five years? Two, maybe three times?

ESPN and CBS both showed Notre Dames list and the Browns contacted him two years ago but he declined. So did the Steelers.

Following the 2006 NFL season, rumors circulated that Ferentz may have been in consideration for the Pittsburgh Steelers' head coaching job after Bill Cowher stepped down. However, before Cowher's departure, Ferentz was asked about his possible interest in the position, and stated: “I know that staff pretty well and they’ve got some good guys in that building. My guess is that's where they would go. But I’m not interested, and I doubt they are, either. I’ve got a great job right here.” The Steelers job eventually went to Mike Tomlin.

Also, how easy do you think it would be to recruit at Iowa? Yes, it's part of the game but it's Iowa. All there is to do here is drink. Iowa City has like the most bars per square mile in the country I believe or close to it. There is nothing else to do.

There were rumors that Steve Spurrier would be coaching the Vols this season. The ND wish lists were purely speculative.

Misread it, thought you meant 2 undefeated in 1 league. I still think a 1 loss SEC team gets in over Boise though because the SEC championship gives you that chance to make an impression against a good team, while Boise is hammering another conference cupcake. The computer rankings virtually assure it, unless the non-BCS school is at least a couple spots ahead in the polls.

Never heard this rumors. I get what you're saying though. I know for a fact the Browns contacted him though. I live 5 minutes off the campus. Iowa City isn't big.

They beat us in '06. We weren't anything too special then.

I'm talking about knocking out divisional/conference champs, winning BCS games aside from against Notre Dame, etc.

I think Wisconsin also beat Arky that year, too.

I can't imagine the Browns would be stupid enough to hire another college coach after Butch Davis did so badly.

Looking ahead, here is your problem. Next year, you get UF and Alabama at home. Given who you have graduating and your woes at QB, it seems likely that Alabama will beat you handily. And though Florida loses Tebow and a lot of defensive players, they've been a lot better this year about underclassmen playing defense, and it is certainly conceivable that UF will be favored next year at Neyland.

2011 is a question mark for all three teams, but you go on the road to both that year and it is entirely possible that both will be in good enough shape to continue their winning ways versus UT.

It sounded like they wanted to. Iowa upped Kirk Ferent'z pay because of it and that's why most people think he is overrated. They don't think he deserves what he is making. He wins without much talent though. Iowa knows they can't do better.

Let's put it this way... look at what Gene Chizik has done with Auburn. Nothing special but they compete with teams. Kirk Ferentz flat out b**** slapped him when he was at Iowa State and Iowa State has as much if not more talent according to rivals. Ferentz would do much better than Chizik did at Auburn this season. Iowa has had one of the best defenses in the country the past few years. I believe last year they were in the top 10. They might have been this year too.
