The End of the Bruce Pearl Era.

i'd say the handwriting started appearing on the wall in the loss to arkansas in the 07-08 SEC tourney. the pathetic, disappointing tourney play (with the PG fiasco) secretly foreshadowed the beginning of the end.

today put the period on the sentence.

Bruce brought the program back to life with his passion and energy. Now we need a real coach to take us to the promise land.

This post has got to be a joke. C'mon seriously......He won an SEC Championship and has been in the hunt every year he has been here. He has achieved a #1 one ranking and out coached / out promoted the likes of Kentucky and Florida. Lets not cry over one loss. Especially one that was on the other side of the country. Let me make a prediction: Pearl quits UT before UT quits him. Mark it down.

the point of this thread is not "Fire Bruce Pearl today."

I was a HUGE Pearl supporter when he first got here. I LOVED HIS PASSION, POSITIVITY, AND HIS OVERALL ENERGY........ AND HIS FAST PACED PRESSURE STYLE! i would love nothing more for our team to start playing with the same energy, discipline and IQ as.... lofton, jajuan, dane, ramar, howell, chism, patterson, wingate, watson.... did. (which wasn't much but it was enough).

unfortunately, i have watched how his teams fade in february and march. and now i am watching a team he's coached for 2 years.... some of the guys have been here 3+ years. when it comes to X's and O's...this team looks like they practiced together for about a week. when it comes to effort, energy, discipline, playing as a team, playing defense, rebounding, shot selection... they fail. they beat teams with talent and number of players. they get beat when the other team equals them in either talent or is better disciplined.

bruce will last through this year of course. and probably last through next year.... he may be here 2 more full seaons after this year. but this pathetic group of underachievers proves he can't coach. he cannot take us to the next level as a coach.

maybe we can pay him 2.6 million to be head cheerleader... paint himself up in orange and sit with the students, give speeches on campus, and pump up boosters and alumni.

Since you love Bruce so much, please call him and tell him fans are begging to see a competent offense on the floor. The likes of which we haven't seen since Chris Lofton left. Also, we are getting tired of the complacency. Bruce was on the sideline clapping just like Fulmer used to do. He better light a fire under the players arses and his own arse. We have played flat the past 5 games, this was just the first team talented enough to make us pay for it.

:good!:

Pearl used his players how he had to when he came into the program. A team full of other SEC rejects, and 2 stars. He made them have a hunger for winning, and we all reaped the benefits of those glorious years. Now he has his own players, and his own system and it isn't working too well. I say either give him a chance, or force him to go back recruiting kids that wouldn't make Kentucky/LSU/Florida, and then have those kids live to get revenge against those teams.... As apposed to guys like Scotty Hopson and John Wall who play for their futures, and not for the team. (Not to judge them, just citing a few examples.)

I think Coach Pearl is a lot like Les Miles. They can be pretty good with someone else's recruits and pretty average with their own.

Matchups happen every day, sometimes they work in your favor sometimes they dont. I dont begin with the same premise that we are as good as our ranking anyway and am intersted to see how pearl gets this team to play better, especally at the point. I will decide on how great or poor our coach is after seeing how we respond, personnel decisoins giong forward and how the SEC plays out. That is my "perspective". And to the person who asked how i have none - GO VOLS!

Tell me which matchup last night shouldn't have favored us? Perspective helps more when there is some reality to it, rather than it just be a garbage rationalization to feel better about poor performance.

every matchup "should have favored us"....i agree with that, but the game and scoreboard doesnt. Top to bottom you are right, 100% and I agree that it was a terrbile loss. I am only saying we should see the reaction to the loss. If we can't get it right then CBP will be on the hot seat and should probably go. but i am not prepared to run him out of town yet. At the end of the season i will check back and see how i feel about it, for now im pulling for pearl to get it together and make a run.

Who's calling for him to be run out of town?

Everyone wants that. History and a perceived inability to make changes/adjustments do not leave me as optimistic as you.

Probably not going to happen. He just signed a 7 yr extension that pays him 2 million+.

I think its funny that some fans think you can go out and get a championship coach like you would order a pizza. UCLA, UK, and UNC are the three best basketball schools in the country. Yet even with their tradition and money it took them a while and a couple of attempts to find their current coach.

UT is a position with very little basketball heritage and maybe the worst overall basketball conference. Do you really think that someone like Izzo is going to leave Michigan State or Calhoun is going to leave Uconn, places where they've won NC and are kings to come to UT? The fact of the matter is that college basketball coaches are much more stable than football coaches. With the exception of guys like Calapari and Pitino usually coaches stay because most moves would be considered lateral and the money difference is not that great.

I don't think Pearl will ever win a NC. If he gets lucky, he'll make a Final Four. But I also don't think we can buy a NC coach. Our best course is to enjoy the ride and if a NC coach comes on the market make a swap or keep our eyes open for the next up and coming coach. The latter option is a risky one though. I'm pretty confident Hamilton has a list of coaches and won't be afraid to make a change when it's needed.

bear with me. im on page 3 and writing down names. title of the thread kind of leans that way as well

As long as Tennessee continues to recruit these "street" basketball players they will never be anything but average. These type players maybe exciting offensive players but they are lousy defensive players because they don't/won't put any effort into playing defense.
