The Endzone Garden Thread

I was never allergic to it. THen in my early 20's got around it burning in a burn pile. Eye's swoll up like Mike Tyson beat on me. Was allergic at that point for a few years. But, now I'm back to being almost non-responsive to it. The best thing to always have on hand if you are allergic, or just cautious, is Tec Nu. Nothing beats it. Used by US Forest Service.

The poison ivy in a burn pile thing happened to a student of mine a few years ago.

Another one who had graduated was working for the local fire department and was helping put out a fire in a barn full of tobacco. He wound up in the hospital for over a week, bad shape, with nicotine poisoning from the burning tobacco. Crazy.

haha gotcha
It's a very nice looking plant.
They are mind-hurtingly slow to germinate, at least mine were. They did all finally get going though.

I haven’t had a ton of luck rooting cuttings, but if the water method doesn’t work, you might try rooting them in damp potting or seed-starting soil. Use a clear plastic cup so that you can see when (if) roots start. Pick up some rooting compound (a powder) at a garden center, and dip the cutting in water then the powder before sticking in the soil.

^^^ This is supposed to work and does for others. I suspect my ADHD interferes with the process for me. Look, something shiny just went by! But I’m guessing you normal people will have better luck. 🤪

Thanks. I wondered about the powder. I have some of that. When I take a clipping of a butterfly bush, hydrangea, or geranium, I use the powder. I have never used the powder on herbs, but it It might do the trick on that Thai Basil. I will give it a go when I am outside piddling around in this heat. The regular basil does ok in just water, change it every couple of days, but that Thai (a little "woodier" than the regular basil) isn't doing anything at all.

That's some nice Thia basil Gordo.

Thanks, I took a piece from another one and started it in a cup.

Cool, I guess that's better than spending $1.59 and having to plant 100 a hunert more of them.

I spent about $80 on fertilizer, chemicals and stuff, but it was fun.

Well, I planted 3 different types of corn trying to find one that grows well for me. My early dwarf corrn stunted and went double dwarf. It has good ears on it ready to pick, but we're talking super short ears with only a couple inches of corn. It was also a cool weather corn and I planted it about 3 weeks late probably. I intended for it to be early... But, then it hit me. Instead of wasting it, I will pick it today, and be pickling whole corn on the cob. Ta-Da.

The only one growing well for me right now is the Six Shooter, a sweet white corn. Maybe I should just go back to Silver Queen and Golden Queen.

Glass Gem is growing great, although it hasn’t tasseled yet. (Is that the correct phrase?) But it was only planted May 25.

That's pretty darn good to have planted so late. Corn, although not typically an early veggie, has a small window to get planted and get growth on it before the big heat sets in.

What are those giant plants beside the corn?

Sunflowers. Lemon Queen and Evening Sun. There are scarlet runner beans down in there, starting to grow up the cornstalks.

It’s my variation on a 3 Sisters garden, but I’m boycotting squash this year, after last year’s squash beetle and cucumber beetle infestations.

I tried a different pickling cucmber this year since my Boston pickler sucked last year. They haven't really shot up the trellis yet, but were loaded with blooms and fruiting out. I've cut 4 off. But all the lower blooms got moldy/mildewy looking all of a sudden and dried up. I've cleaned them off the plants. Hope that helps. My Lemon Cukes OTOH, are going nuts now. And a good eating mild cuke. I have never been successful growing eating cukes in GA or TN. always bitter. But the Lemon Cukes do great for me.

Glass gems was a good idea. That's cool. Have you ever grown them before?
No, I haven’t. And I’ve never grown any kind of corn before. Or okra. Or sunflowers. Or potatoes. lol

If I do get any Glass Gem ears, I’ll probably donate them to church for fall altar arrangements or something. I didn’t really think that through at all. I just saw the picture, thought “Ooo pretty”, and ordered.

My poor impulse control adds excitement to gardening. 🤪

I really wanted to do the sister planting. Two years ago, my first year growing the big tilled garden I've posted pics of, I planted the beans with the corn stalks on a variety of 7-8 goot hefty sweet corn. The corn didn't do what it was suppossed to and hte beans pulled it over. This 3rd year is my besst in this garden so far. I went corn/butterpeas/pole beans/corn accross. At the end of the butter peas, is my two squashes to even the rows. So, They're more a cousin planting. Then i have a bush stringless Calima green bean kind of by itself. My watermelon looked great. I've still got about 8-10 softball size. But, they should be bigger by now. I may have paused them when I moved them around to weed them and put the straw in. Got some bush butternut fruiting. Cantelope hasn't fruited yet. It's way behind for some reason. Some critter always busts them open and cleans them out down to the rind anyways.

My delicata squash is producing fruit. I’m watching them for bold stripes and an off white color. Anyone have experience with delicata?

Is that an eatin' or lookin' squash? I'll have to look it up. I went with a different zuchinni this year. A Sicilian White Palermo. Very pale light green skin and buttery smooth and mild. Plants look good, and I've got about 4 squash so far. It stalled during hte first super hot week at the end of our brief drought. But, it's picked back up. If it puts out good, I'll plant it again next year. Might be a good fall re-plant in my area as well. I plant Pic n Pic for yellow squash. Have had good luck with it last 2 years. Seems like most squash ends up yielding to the diseaes and bugs at some point anyway.

I looked at some white zucchini this year but just wound up finishing some seeds with 2015 on the package. I was late, but I should have some zucchini soon. Trying to stay ahead of the squash bugs and checking the leaves for larvae is exhausting sometimes. haha

I also had to look that one up. What I read said it's a winter variety, though. ??? I will be curious to see how it goes for you.

YESSSSS....same here haha
