The Endzone Garden Thread

That's beautiful!

So with all those beans, do you have problems with Mexican bean beetles? I'm not planting any beans (in a 4x7 bed, mind you) until mid-late July because of them boogers. Well, and because I'm so far behind on my garden.

So far the beans are bug free. The potatoes are another story. It is a war. I gave them a good dusting last week, then it started to rain - for a week. All the dust is gone. And so it goes.

And I have so metal fence posts and hog wire fencing I plan on "installing" for the blue ribbon beans to climb.

I installed this wire late last night. By this morning the bean vines have already found the fence and claimed it.

OK, I have a hog wire question, lol.
I'm guessing it comes in a roll. Does it attempt to kill you when you unroll it, especially as you reach the end of the roll?

We have hardware cloth, which isn't nearly as strong, but it's like wrestling a dragon when we get to the last 8' or so.

When it was new, I had to lay a fence post on it to keep it from chasing me across the garden. As the years went by, it did less of this. But it is wise to keep both eyes open as you near the end of the roll. It still like to curl a little.

But one good thing about it, you can get your hands thru the wire and pick both sides at once.

Has anyone grown Kentucky Wonder bush beans? I have my beans ready for planting (KW/ pole and Luther’s Crooked Greasy/ pole), but it’s handy to be able to protect non-trellised beans with row covers against the #%^*+ beetles.

OTOH, I prefer eating fresh to canned beans, so that’s an argument back again for pole (not the quintillion beans all at once bit.)

Caterpillars have hatched on my tomato plants. Lost two green tomatoes as well as foliage. Picked off twenty of the little ones, yesterday (2 days off from tending them). Today, only three tiny ones. The war has begun. 😡

The past two years, I was helped by Cardinals hopping through my plants, picking them off deftly. The Cardinals left the tomato fruits unmolested. Only a mockingbird pecked at the ripening ones.

My carpenter bee traps have captured one adult and three bee flies. There are plenty of carpenter bees in my yard and garden. They have found other places to nest. The almond oil treatments to the boards of my screened porch have proved an effective repellent.

Tomato horn worms?
The older I get the harder they are to see. It's always nice to see the wasps eggs on their backs.
OTOH, I've only seen large ones and never 20.

A few hornworms. Mostly, the black ones with yellow stripes.

Green beans climbing to top and looking good. Corn looking good. Maters look great with greenies. Melons spreading well and blooming. Squash starting to set. Peppers a little slack but coming on. Okra struggling, but should have one good plant. But cukes have a wilting issue even though they are loaded with blooms. Step-son says from too much rain. Soil mold he says.

Picked up 8 more sweet basil plants from Lowez yesterday. Going in the ground this afternoon. I have 4 12 oz containers of pesto frozen so far. Shooting for 20 by end of season plus a couple of trays of basil "ice cubes".

@Gordo your basil rooting in water idea is too slow. I have had a sprig in water for 2 weeks with no roots. Upper leaves still look great doe.

Did you cut at an angle below a leaf node?
