The eternal QB debate (merged)

How good to you have to be to hand the ball off with out a fumble?

In 40 years watching SEC ball I don't think I have seen a QB this lost on the field. He is Junior for God's sake! We have had some lost looking freshmen in the past.

Also, for some strange reason Crompton seems to do OK on the 2 minute drill with his passing. I think he is a head case. I think he may give 960 SAT Tebow a run for his money on smarts.

"I think we should have won the game" -- it what alternate universe?

Here's my ratings over the past 10-15 years.

1. Peyton Manning
2. Tee Martin
3. Andy Kelly
4. Heath Shuler
5. Casey Clausen
6. Erik Ainge

Andy Kelly was so good that even though he hasn't played for the Volunteers in 17 years, he's still the 3rd best quarterback of the past 10-15 years. That my friends is impressive.

Crompton's numbers arent as bas as Ainge's in 05.

I thought Henton wasn't too good, mainly an option QB. No arm.

The rest of UT's QB's in the past, have been pretty solid:

Ainge 2007-2004
Clauson 2003-2000
Martin 1999-1998
Manning 1997-1994
Shuler 1993-1992
Kelly 1991-1990
J Francis 1989-1988
T Robinson 1986-87

Who did I leave out?

I thought he had pretty good leadership about him from what I have seen of his play.

Sanders played enough bad football in one game.. Boston College 87...to get on my list...

The kid is pretty bad at QB. Crompton has a bunch of flaws. Accuarcy is bad and his football smarts are bad. He just doesnt have the instincts to be a top qb in college.

He didn't even play a full game as the starter, and in regards to this argument is not relevant.

That's interesting. It would be a tough call between Heath and Andy as to which was better. I'd give a slight edge to Heath personally. I always liked the way Heath played. He wasn't much of a pro quarterback, but he was one of the best college qb's I've seen play. I would probably rate Shuler above Tee Martin. Condredge would have to be in that list as well and so long as he wasn't doped up, Tony Robinson was better than either Clausen or Ainge.

By far Manning had the talent on the rest. That said, I always felt like there was some sort of friction between him and some of the rest of the team that made the rest not want to perform up to par for him otherwise he should have had a national championship.

1. Manning
2. Shular
3. Holloway
4. Kelly
5. Martin
6. Too close to call

I don't know that Crompton is the worst. I do know he's the worst I've seen to be allowed to stay in that position for 3 games without going to plan B.

Who did I leave out?

Your dates are off

82-83 Cockrell
84-85 Robinson Dickey started Ga tech to the sugar bowl in 85 season

86-88 Francis , sanders started 1 game, a loss at BC in 87
89-91 Andy Kelly, Kelly replaced Henton as starter midway in the season
92-93 Shuler
94 Colquit Started only one game, Helton started before injury and Stewart and Manning split duties rest of season

Helton was pretty bad, I think he was injured, but could play. So they used that as an excuse to get him off the field.

The biggest problem with Crompton, I think, is UT never put away opponents in the last couple of years, so Ainge was always on the field and Crompton never got any playing time. He was highly recruited out of High School, so I am hoping that once the cobwebs leave, he will pick up. He has to think about what he is doing and then he hits the panic button. He is not at the "zen" place yet where you don't think about what you are doing, you just do it. I think that is why he is better in the 2 minute, no time to think, go, go, go.

I memory serves me correct though, Vol fans have always been pretty hard on QB's, Hell even Peyton's freshman and sophmore years Vol fans said he sucked... Truth was Cutcliff wasn't as bad as Vol Fans thought...sometimes the gas isn't greener. Sometimes maybe the fans get spoiled and lose sight of the fact we have had some really good teams. At some point the talent level catches up and games get tougher.

I knew Todd Helton pretty well at the time. His problem was he didn't want to become injured. He was worth too much as a baseball player to risk it. When he came to UT he said he'd always wanted to play football for UT growing up in Oak Ridge. He had a $750,000/yr offer to play baseball out of high school. We had more than one conversation about the risk he would be taking playing QB. Colquit was supposed to be able to handle the offense till Peyton or Stewart was ready to go. Todd stumbled into a situation he didn't want to be in at the time.

For what it's worth, with the team we had that year (Line, backfield, defense) had Shular played his Sr year, I can't see how UT couldn't have won a championship. Money talks and bs walks though, and for what Heath got, I can't blame him for leaving.
