LOL, if he watched a football team with a bad offensive line, no weapons, and a first year
starter make the playoffs then the logical conclusion is the coaching was subpar after four years of recruiting. The roster is literally determined by the coaches.
First, Heupel’s first class was basically Pruitt’s last (3-7 record, NCAA violations etc). Only one kid from that class contributed ( Jaylen Wright). The next two classes were under NCAA potential penalties. 2nd, the idea of out recruiting schools like OSU, Ga, Alabama, etc for kids that have grown up watching them play for NCs while your program averaged 6 wins a year for 15 years is a pipe dream. Only since July 2023, when the NCAA cloud was basically removed, has the program been on a level playing field.

Pili’s injury was huge. I didn’t realize it at the time, but as we played better and better competition, it showed. Ohio State and Georgia exploited our LBs.

Offensive line was bad in pass blocking but a bit better than serviceable in the run game. Mediocre O-line play has become a new Tennessee tradition dating back to Dooley’s infamous season without signing a single O-line prospect. Currently, our shortfall appears to be in development with our lineman.

The WRs couldn’t get open consistently - and not at all against the top competition.

Our other new tradition is undisciplined play with lots of penalties and unforced errors.

Overall, a good year - a great one in comparison to the Kiffin, Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt years. We still inexplicably choked away a big opportunity (Arkansas) . . . and the goodness of the year was largely eclipsed by who terribly we ended the season in Columbus.

We still aren’t a serious contender, but there’s stuff to build upon for the long haul. Unfortunately, I think we’ll be a 8 win team next season and won’t sniff the playoffs. We are going to likely lose all three of the “big 3” - UF and Bummer because they’re on the road and will be better — Georgia because we can’t beat them anywhere. And recent history tells us that we’ll lose at least one more by sleepwalking into it or shooting ourselves in the foot when it matters.

Nico will have to take a significant stride forward - but what weapons will he have? Does anyone think the O-line will be any better next season? And how good is Nico really? Not sure after watching this past season. Still a lot to prove.

I think everyone is discounting how Charmin soft our schedule was this year. It will be CONSIDERABLY tougher in '25. We really only beat one good team and that was at home. CJH does deserve credit for the results, but its obvious how ill prepared our team was against OSU. That should NEVER happen.
We have the same schedule next year.

Was the O line in Heupel’s first 2 seasons that much better?
Well they didn't false start everytime somebody in the stands yelled booo. So yea, they were better... 😎

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Those "step on your johnson" penalties make me insane...

Very well said and I think you hit all the major weaknesses.

Bad luck, bad evaluations? Don't know. Losing Pili was a lot more damaging than I thought at the time. Georgia, then OSU, exposed how bad our linebackers were this year. Will Brooks at safety made some big plays and is a great story, but he was not going to provide any deep support coverage to any D1 wide receiver.

Our o-line was a major disappointment this year, but the biggest disappointment (to me) were the wide receivers. At the beginning of the year, Kevin Simon was on the Jayson Swain show and made the comment that none of our receivers were capable of starting for any team in the upper half of the SEC. I thought he was way off, but he appears to have been right. Our receivers, on average, were just not able to get separation, but more importantly, they would run their routes and then just stand there. To me, it was such bizarre behavior to the point that I wonder if they were coached to do it (it is about impossible to see on TV, but obvious watching from the stands). I thought it was natural instinct for a wide receiver to try and find a seam when the quarterback started to scramble. Very few times do I remember him (Nico) just tucking the ball and running (on a designed pass), he was always looking, it just wasn't there.

With these deficiencies, we went 10 - 3. No one is satisfied at any major D1 program losing even a single game, but one of twelve team to make the playoffs is pretty damn good to build from. I will go into believing we will win every game next year, when I don't believe that, I will start calling for the chopping block.
I heard many VFL’s had said that about our receivers last year.It falls back on their coach.

I agree, we need to upgrade at WR and oline, but our secondary still can't defend a pass for $HT. McCoy is legit, but does no good if you can't put him in position to defend. Banks always has them out of position. D line was talent and RG.
4th in the SEC in passing yards allowed. 27th in the nation in passing yards allowed. Yeah the secondary is terrible 🙄

I agree. Going 10-2 was very unlikely with this oline and WRs.
So do I, we went from a fast pace to ordinary because we couldn’t do the fast pace O. Our D and running game excelled most of the season. The game against OSU could have been a little different with Sampson.

What about DC, maybe OC, WR Coach? Special Teams Coach, ? Banks hasn't learned that if you can't stop the pass, you have to try and stop the passer. No championships with Banks at DC. IMO.
Banks is the main reason we won 10 games. If we would have had even a decent offense, the game against OSU would have been vastly different. How many games did we play like crap in the first half offensively? The only reason we were in those games is because of the defense.

True....Damn good job getting in the 12........Also, going into year 5 it's up the CJH to fix areas we've been weak at. That's 100 percent up to Heupel. OL being huge that's been a weak link. In Heupel's offense we should never be playing with average to below average WRs. It's going to interesting to see how he fixes it.

This is football and this happens to everyone. How did the 1997 Vols fair against Nebraska? Relax and chill. I'd rather compete and get lit up then be in Ole Miss' position.

Agree with most of this, but I think we have a shot with UGA at home next year. Also, I think the OL will be better next year because I think the tackles will be better. Heard got better as he worked through the injury and got into shape. Also, it is possible for 5-star tackles to start as freshmen. Satterwhite’s play at center will be critical for our season.

Without any pressure on the QB, against a quality WR corp the db's are sitting ducks.

I also agree with the assessment that Brooks is a good story because of his smarts and nose for the ball but he appears on the slower side which gets him exposed against elite athletes. It means he's probably not in position to help over the top or in the right place when there is spacing.
