The Film Guy Brooks Austin tweets about Heupel/UT

Brooks has been pretty positive about Tennessee all season. His breakdowns are pretty good if you have time to watch them, and he sees how we had to lean heavily into the power run game to succeed this year. Also, he argued that Nico’s struggles were a mix of inexperience and lacking protection with film to back it up. In his show, Tennessee has come up as one of the bigger threats to shake up the established powerhouses.

He also is an “insider” for UGA football and has a lot of sympathy for coaches. He criticizes fans all the time for wanting coaches fired when things aren’t working.

Of course tweets are posted to get clicks and often use hyperbole to do so. Which explains this post. Our offensive line was not bad. From guard to guard they were very good which is why we had a good running game. Our tackles struggled partly because they stayed banged up all year and partly because they were not athletic enough to consistently block elite edge rushers. The penalties were the result of struggling to keep up, getting an early jump (false starts) and holding (trying to keep Nico healthy). It was what it was. Heard when healthy can be a good SEC level tackle if he puts in the work. No weapons comment is a joke. Sampson was SEC player of the year. White, McCoy, and Thornton all had their moments but all played hurt most of the year. We didn't have much help behind them which explains the exodus of WR's from the roster via the portal, similar to DB's last year. CJH did adopt his style to make the most of what he had. Our roster is not as good or any better than Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, and Ohio State. We went 3-2 against them. We caught both Georgia and OSU at a bad time for us. In their home stadiums and after they had sustained embarrassing loses. Going into this season most pundits had us 8-4, or 9-3. Very few if any had us in the playoff. Certainly CJH did an excellent job but its not like our roster sucked. We were / are thin and had some of our most important pieces banged up much of the year. Rather than say we have No Weapons, maybe we should appreciate efforts like Squirrel made when he kept playing even when he couldn't raise his right arm above his shoulder. Watch the catches Thornton made against Oklahoma, MSU and Vandy and tell me he's not a weapon. This was a very good football team. It wasn't deep enough to sustain the injuries we had and take on probably the two best team in the county. The Arkansas loss was a head scratcher, but everyone else in the SEC had one. Beat the Gators in Gainesville and we we're most likely in the hunt for the CFP next year. The sky ain't falling! GBO

Is the O line THAT bad? One of the top rushing offenses in the country. Pass blocking isn't the best, but that's only half of the offense. They were once again a semi finalist for the Joe Moore award which goes to the top o line unit in the country. I think it's a combination of it all...all offensive positions, including QB, and coaching/play calling.

Anyone calling for a change is a complete idiot
Yeah, I don't even like him saying "alot of people". I just haven't observed that being the case. I'm not on Twitter so maybe there are idiots on there doing it, but I have 't seen many people call for Heupel to go. I just don't like that narrative getting spread and make it seem like there is a large portion of the fanbase that wants him gone. It's just not true.

This is year 4 and they haven't developed one high school kid they have recruited on the OL that is playing any real minutes? The portal OL they signed are marginal at best. That is all that needs to be said our $900K OL coach, period. Now to OC, Ohio Stated need a new OC the hire Kelly who has OC and Head coaching experience, we hire a guy that has never called plays in a high school or college game ever. Who made the better hire?

But we go to Gainsville and Tuscaloosa. With our troubles on the road and going to both of those is reason for concern.

There are a few here that are freaked out over it and have already chalked those 2 up as losses. Some as early as 1st quarter of the gater game this year.

We dont have "troubles on the road" what we have is a young QB who has a hard time on the road at hostile places because it magnifies the communication issues and inexperience making the quick reads and leadership.

By the end of next year, when Nico has a good bit of experience under him, there will not be so much "road" issue.

4th in the SEC in passing yards allowed. 27th in the nation in passing yards allowed. Yeah the secondary is terrible 🙄
And 29th in the country, which is probably more accurate. Let's not pretend the SEC isn't down this year. In fact, there is only 1 SEC team with a top 10 offense in ole miss. The 2nd SEC team is the mighty Razorbacks at 13th.

UGA is 11th in the country in passing, 3rd in the SEC and threw it all over us.

OSU is 35th in the country and 5th in the BIG threw it all over us.

Those are 2 teams obviously needed to beat this year and couldn't because our secondary was always out of position and our line was man handled.

Now go look and see where the rest of our opponents ranked in passing and tell me that 4th in the SEC is something to stand on. Banks' defense has always been poor against the pass.

Lol. Okay.

Our young qb that "loves playing road games" needs to learn how to communicate better before the end of the season next year or we're gonna have the same losing issues on the road.

Communication wasn't the only tro...issue we had on the road.

OSU was going to be tough to beat but w/o Sampson, Squirrel, and Thornton there was 0 chance. D-line regressed and did not play the same from the GA game on.
The DL didn't regress from the GA game moving forward. They never were the world beaters everyone thought they were before the end of the season! It wasn't just the DL. It was the entire D and the schematics! Banks isn't the ELITE DC most on this site feel that he is! What has the D under Banks did against all the ELITE Os that he has faced? Is he a great DC? Yes! But, UT needs an ELITE D to shut down ELITE Os to win MOST of the BIG GAMES! Banks hasn't shown he can make halftime adjustments against good teams. Yes, he needs a few more ELITE Jimmy's and Joe's. But, he doesn't appear to be the ELITE DC UT NEEDS!

THIS TIMES A MILLION. You can't get all the knuckleheads on this site to come to the realization that Banks isn't an ELITE DC. I personally would love to see him take another job. Because CJH isn't going to fire him! He isn't an ELITE DC, struggles against the great passing teams every game, and doesn't know when to dial up blitz packages or make adjustments to create trouble for good passing teams! Banks needs to go and take Martinez with him. Halzle and Pope need to go as well. If Elarbee can only teach run blocking and not pass blocking, he needs to go too!

The depressing thing is that we are four years into Heupel’s tenure and we were under equipped at those two critical positions
Well to be honest we knew who we were before the season began. We aren't recruiting at the top of the league. We are not good enough to beat the teams with the real talent (NOT UF & UA, who are average teams that are actually on out level). We were hoping to win. And as I have said on here many times before, the "Hope Strategy" usually fails to launch. There are one game miracles every now and again, but not a seasons worth. You really do have to have great players to win the SEC. And only then can we talk about playoffs.

Some of us think we can bypass being the best team in the league and magically sneak into the playoffs with 10 "wins", luck our way into the 5th seed and wiggle our way to a championship.

Be very clear. That has not yet happened and is very unlikely to ever happen.

We will know when we are back. It will be evident. No guess work will be needed. And we damned sure are not there now. Not even close.

This guy gets it. Might go down as CJH best coaching job in regards to maximizing what he had.
His best coaching job will be when he fields a team that's capable of actually beating the best team in the SEC, and then going out and proving it on the field.

It's his own fault that he didn't have anything to go to and had to end up "maximizing" his poor talent collection all the way into clearly losing to the only two good teams we played and also losing to one of the many average teams that we played.

Gotta be way better than this. And the clock is ticking. Teams are getting better right now. 10 "wins" next year will be tougher, while obviously having less along both lines of scrimmage. That's not a recipe for success in this league.
