The Florida Postgame Report

The catch is the whole 'winning out' part. Beating UF twice didn't suddenly make us a whole lot better than any of our remaining opponents. The Vols need to "bring it" each and every night.

Not one single person has mentioned Skylar Mcbee's performance. He has stepped up big since being inserted into the starting lineup. We all know he can shoot the three, but I have been especially impressed with the way he plays D against much bigger and stronger opponents. He has also shown he can hit clutch FTs down the stretch. I just thought it was a shame he hasn't been mentioned in this thread.

Uh, hey now. Yes, I did.

And a short handed UF at that. We are a lot better than most thought at first tip off but we are still a young and deeply flawed team. The NIT is a good goal for a few reasons. First of all we will almost definitely move deeper into that tourney than the AA's. The more games we play this year the better we are next.

1. Potentially program changing win. Top 10 SEC opponent on the road? That was huge. This team now has a chance for a tourney bid.

2. Jeronne Maymon was the best player on the floor tonight. That's dominating the paint. Great job by Mr. Maymon.

3. Kenny Hall was very active. That was two straight good games from him, probably the first time in his career. Nice to see that.

4. Trae Golden was a leader today. Just a leader. That's exactly what you want from a point guard. 9-11 from the line too.

5. Love the four guard lineup look today. Really helped with the press and spread Florida out to clear the room for Maymon. Great call by Coach Martin.

6. Jarnell has hit a wall. It happens to everyone, and he's nursing an injury. He'll fight through it and get better as the year goes along.

7. Tennessee did a great job handling the press. They refused to play Florida's game, and it showed. That's a great job by the guards.

8. Hey, Florida...we own you :)

9. Coach Martin has led this team through a lot, and he's done an incredible job. I'm just really impressed with the progress of this team. I could not imagine this happening two months ago. I'm really proud to have him as a representative of the University of Tennessee, proud to follow this team as they have never quit, and proud to be a Tennessee Volunteer.

It's great to be a Tennessee Volunteer!!!

What's funny is Florida thought when Pearl left, we would not OWN THEM anymore. I guess now they know how we feel in football.:p

And Stokes was injured and only played 11 min. UT manhandled Fla today. I don't think if Rosario played today it would've mattered.

this statement says all anyone on here needs to know about you...you take a 1st round blowout in the ncaa over a nit championship any day of the week.

btw: im sure you didnt know this, but this team will get to go and play and practice in europe this summer. that will provide lots of extra practice and games most teams dont get.

same on decision making yes. . .but he is playing hard on D, that's an improvement.

He scored 0 points today, however, he did not make any bad plays, played good defense and didn't take any shots. Give the guy credit for not trying to shoot the team out of a victory and just playing within himself.

I thought McBee's three-pointer off an out-of-bounds play where he was in the corner and fading toward the baseline was very Loften-esque, ala the Winthrop game in the Big Dance in 2006.

Witch Doctor say considering all thats happened in the last 10.5 mths(Bruce was fired March 21st) NIT wouldnt be such a bad thing for these kids. (IF no NCAA)

What about what I said wasn't giving him credit. . .I said he played hard on D. His decision making on offense leaves a lot to be desired. . .that was all I said and it's all true.

the charge he had at about the 6 minute mark with florida rallying that fouled him out was dumb. other than that he played within himself, that play is the type of play that frustrates us all though.

a 5th year senior cant make that play or turnover in that spot of the game.

Actually I didn't know about europe. You are 100% correct though I would rather win or go deep in the NIT and get guys game experience for next year than eat a pointless first round blow out in the Dance. Sorry if I think just getting in is worth more than getting important game time for a young team that can actually do something next year with that experience. If being stupid is being a good fan and being realistic is being a bad fan color me bad.

your not being realistic though, thats my point. you ask any coach in america which they'd prefer a 1st round ncaa loss, or a nit championship and they'll take the ncaa everytime.

you keep going on about getting the young team experience, that is what the off-season is for. PLUS, we will have about 3 weeks i believe it is in the summer in which our whole team and staff will go to europe and play against opposing european teams. this is a great learning experience, and you get tons of practicing and chemistry situations to build off when you get back.

heres the other experience factor you are missing. have you ever been to a nit game? they are usually pretty empty and just not very hyped or much of a draw. so if next year your goal is the ncaa tournament, wouldnt experience IN THE NCAA tournament and seeing all the medai and hype be more valuable? its not even a question. the experience young players get from 1 game in the ncaa tournament rivals that of the experience they get from the nit. the nit is like playing in a hs gym with a few hundred fans watching, playing in the ncaa is completely different. so if your goal is to be in the ncaa tourney next year, you would definitely want your players gaining the experience of atleast going there this year, over going to the hs gyms for nit games.

one other key aspect here is recruiting. the name NCAA TOURNAMENT speaks for itself and i can promise you is brought up on the recruiting trail. the NIT is just made fun of by anyone, and everyone in college basketball, its called the losers bracket for a reason. some coaches even decline invitations to the NIT, because they dont want their program being associated with the NIT, and recruits seeing that exposure. seeing tennessee on those march madness brackets, and all over espn when analysts are breaking down matchups is what you call exposure. the nationally televised games of the ncaa tournament are what you also call exposure. exposure goes a long ways as far as recruiting goes.

im not trying to call you dumb or stupid or a bad fan. im simply informing you that, our coach, and every coach in the nation would choose to go to the ncaa tournament and lose in the 1st round over going to the NIT and winning the championships. the exposure, experience and education you gain from the ncaa tournament is far and above better than that you'll receive in the nit.

100% correct. And beating Florida didn't make us better than (most of) our remaining opponents, we were already at least on par with everyone but Vandy, when you factor in the Bama mess.
folks should also remember that the committee tends to weigh late season games higher than early season games, so going on a big run late helps immensely. That said, I still think this is an NIT team. The glaring deficiencies in the backcourt are going to make it hard to win out, which is probably what they need to do to have a good chance.

If we make the NCAA's, I'll be stunned. This has NIT written all over this team.

We'll probably lose one we shouldn't along the way and it wouldn't surprise me one bit. This team has gotten better and that is all you can ask of Martin at this point.

I just wish we had the Oakland, Peay and UGA games back. Those should've been 3 W's, but I never figured us sweeping Fla or beating UCONN either.

Tennessee would be in the second position right now if not for crapping away games against Georgia and Mississippi State.
