The Florida Postgame Report

Thanks for the postgame report. Yet another game I had to DVR. I think every game that I have DVR'd and not seen live we have won. I think I need to continue that trend.

How was Golden? I saw that he only had 2 points in the 1st half and I didn't think that was good. He only scored 9 points and McRae was the only one in double figures. I never would've thought we would win with only one player in double figures with the way Fla scores.

Huge win. I haven't said a word about the tourney and I'm not going to start now. Just keep winning and it will take care of itself.

It's only crazy if it doesn't work! :clapping:

1. YES!!!! The biggest win in the Cuonzo Martin Era. A gutsy, tough effort from the Vols in a national prime time game. The signature win that Tennessee needed.

2. The defense. That was the key. They held a top ten offensive team in the country to 42% shooting and 23.5% from 3. They were aggressive on their ball screen defense and nothing came easy from Florida. They got after every jump shot.

3. Jarnell Stokes might not have been huge offensively, but his defense was incredible. His paint coverage is seriously underrated. He hedge hard all night and did a great job getting back to protecting the rim. He dominated the boards with 14 tonight. Just a wonderful performance.

4. Nine turnovers. ONLY NINE. Against a really good Florida defense. That's show maturation. UT was crisp with their passes. When Florida pressed, it didn't matter.

5. The Bernard King Player of the Game: Jordan McRae cooled off in the second half, but who cares? How about 17 points in the first half? Not only did he score 27 and have his way, he had 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. It was his most complete game as a Vol. He also played great D on Kenny Boyton and Erik Murphy. Guys, Jordan McRae is a monster.

6. The defense on Erik Murphy shows Cuonzo's great defensive teaching ability. They did the same thing to Kyle Wiltjer. They fronted him and took him out of rhythm. They switched almost all ball screens. And they got out and contested every jump shot. He had no shot. Great team effort on defense too. It wasn't going to be one guy, and it wasn't.

7. The big number for today? +11. UT outrebounded Florida by 11 even though both teams shot 42%. That was the key. Tennessee had 13 offensive rebounds compared to 7 for Florida. There's the game.

8. Yemi Makanjoula gave UT great minutes in the first half. Florida was in the lead and then Jarnell picked up his second foul. What happened? He grabbed five rebounds, an assist, and played great defense that got UT going. Huge pickup from him.

9. Only complaint? Free throws. 11-19 won't cut it.

10. But who cares? UT won a huge game. The biggest win since 2010 against Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen. UT is now a legitimate team for a chance at the NCAA tourney. They have that signature win they needed. Florida looked like a beat down boxer tonight. UT was just too physical. A road game Saturday against Georgia. It's time for payback. Boys and girls, tonight we are having fried gator. And it tastes gooooood.

Go Vols!!!!! :hi:

My initial thought is we didn't even play that well, and won. We were terrible from the FT line, and that usually costs us in close games. McRae was a one man show, and got little help from his teammates offensively. Golden took some bad shots. McRae did as well in the 2nd half. Yemi REALLY needs to become a better offensive player. He has to be able to make those shots under the basket.

Digging deeper though, we limited our TOs, killed them on the boards (especially offensive rebs), and scored off of their TOs. McRae was unstoppable at times, even for a pretty good defender in Wilbekin (who has a remarkable resemblance to the artist formerly known as Prince). Once again, we didn't let a slow start depress our effort and attitude. That is a sign of maturity for this team. Starts like that used to be the death of us, and two straight games we have overcome slow starts to win.

We didn't beat UF at full strength, but we beat them all the same. This was the game of the final 5 I was most concerned about. Let's hope we don't spoil it by choking one up at UGA or Auburn. If we take care of business on the road, losing to Missouri would sting on senior night, but the reality is, that game just became a little more expendable.

Sidenote: Officiating was abysmal. Not because I think we got hosed, though we did at times, but because there was no level of consistency in that game for either team. They were bad on both ends and changed their definition of a foul numerous times. Stokes was robbed of a chance to showcase himself in a big televised game because all of a sudden, he's the big bully again that is only capable of committing fouls, and only drawing the most obvious and egregious fouls himself.

I'll just place this here...Moore and Yemi have got to find some offense. When Moore is out there our offense really struggled because they don't even respect his shot at all, and he's not being aggresive enough. We started both halves slowly with Moore out there, made the switch to Mcbee and took the lead.

Prince is a better player.

I didn't even have to pause it before the girlfriend slapped me on the arm.

SAIP but one thing I noticed last night was the way every guy has really locked in to their role on the team. You didn't see every guy trying to score 20 points. Moore and Richardson especially they had good games mainly because they wasn't trying to do too much with the ball. They worked the ball to Stokes and if that wasn't there they wen't to McRae and either he scored or got someone else the ball in position to score. This team is really looking solid right now. GBO!!!

Just the past 4 weeks have been fun to watch. Great freakin game, great win, i hope they get a chance to dance, they could be pretty damn dangerous......

I had to work way late tonight, so I turned it on with 19:00 left in the second half and saw that Golden and Stokes had less than 10 points each. So I told my fiance "holy crap, Mcrae must be going off." Boy was that an understatement. Guys, we just beat a Florida team ranked as high as 4 in some polls WITHOUT STOKES AND GOLDEN getting their points!!!! Btw, I'm very proud of Golden - as he seems to have turned into a true point guard (something I never thought would happen)... Even on a night when he isn't scoring alot of points, he is still distributing the ball extremely well, and even positioning himself for steals and rebounds better. As for Stokes, thank God he decided to become a man an be strong around the rim. Lately, once he decides to get vertical - no one seems to be able to handle him defensively. That is HUUUUUGE. I'm really excited for this team, and I'm extremely glad we're peaking at the right time. Oh, and ftr... If we somehow dance in a few weeks, I look for us to be a sweet 16 team. 4 guard teams that get hot late are tough to deal with the first two rounds. I love my vols. GBO!!!!

Cuonzo coached a heck of a game. Florida came out with the press early and it affected us a little at the beginning of the game with Moore and Richardson in because they dont bring the offensive threat, but once he put McBee the Gators got scared to press because the open looks we were getting started going to McBee. Its been interesting to see how he uses McBee/Moore based on how other teams try to play us because they are such different players.

Also he got Golden & Stokes breaks when they needed them and we didnt really suffer. Lopez gave a couple of decent minutes, even got a basket, and when Young went out Cuonzo did a good job of going to the all guard lineup that let us switch all screens and really gave Florida problems.

These last few weeks have been fun and it continues to get better. The big thing (other than McRae being a monster) is the way the team compliments each other. Moore & Richardson make us a very good defensive team, and McBee off the bench has given us an offensive spark in several of the games and is a better roll for him.

As long as UT can keep beating the press and hitting those corner 3 pointers we are going to be deadly! Just got to stay hott!

Awesome game!!! Really good to see that when we struggle offensively(and other than Mcrae, we did struggle offensively) we can not only win but win against really good teams.

Florida's Billy Donovan said Tennessee might have the SEC's best point guard (Golden), wing (McRae) and big man (Stokes).

And then we get Maymon back next year! Could be a sick year next year! Hopefully we can keep rolling this year and have some momentum for next year! GO VOLS!

I honestly think Maymon gives you an extra 4-5 wins this year. If he is 100 percent next year, I think we could legitimately be looking at a 3-4 seed - maybe better. Although, UK will be at least 1 loss next year, and we are probably going to drop a couple games early we shouldn't. But with Maymon, I think we would've won Georgetown, UVA, MEM, Ole Miss, and UGA.

Apparently CCM teams get hot down the stretch, injuries or not... So even though having Maymon would have caused us not to go to a 4 guard lineup, we would've gotten hot anyway. This team could be an absolute juggernaut next year

Sorry sir but you are wrong. He might have been a better athlete than JM, but better basketball player he is/was NOT. IMO

Prince was clutch a couple times, but he was a turnover machine. Dude was what, 6'9'' with limited ball handling skills and thought he was a PG. Stupid Tyler Smith... We could've possibly won the dance had he been around his senior year.
