The Foreign Trade Thread

So, no deal with China. New NAFTA deal that ain't much different than the old. Debt setting up for a huge spike. Stock market in turmoil. Price of oil spiking. Auto manufacturers slashing jobs. Stock market is in danger of being down for the year.

You forgot the sky is falling.

I don't think the sky is falling, but things are not all roses like you guys want us to believe.

I don't think the sky is falling but clearly the president doesn't understand trade policy and he's treating it like a toy because (so far) he hasn't had to get Congress' approval for anything he's doing.

I disagree that he doesn't understand it. He is trying to use our leverage as a means to an end. Short term pain for long term gain.

I don't know if Trump is on the right track or completely wrong, only thing I do know is what we have been doing has led to recessions in the past and a severely diminished manufacturing base. Only time will tell if Trump is right or wrong and the way we are divided and fighting amongst ourselves all of our trading partners know that time is on their side.

Kind of like when we go to war. Time is on the enemy's side, and they know it.

Look at what he says about tariffs. This is not how tariffs work.
He is trying to get concessions from China on things like stealing intellectual property, opening up markets, etc. What we have done in the past hasn't worked. I say give him a chance. It's worth a try. It won't last forever.

Sure, better Chinese market access would be better (though ultimately that's their problem) and they do steal US work product. But is there any evidence ramping up tariffs will get us there? Does he or any of his top advisors understand Chinese culture and how to deal with the Chinese government? I don't see it.

And the entire way he frames trade (other countries "stealing" from us) is completely ridiculous.

How would you have addressed them?

Probably wouldn't have given the wealthy tax cuts, especially prior to having a budget with spending cuts. Debt is about to explode.

Tariffs are tried and true losers. Negotiate free trade deals.

I would have addressed illegal immigration with an executive order. Strictly enforce all laws regarding hiring illegals. F#ck a fence.

I was just asking about the trade and tariffs.

What's the incentive for any country to negotiate or renegotiate a trade deal if you don't have a way to force them to the table? How do you negotiate with someone when they have you bent over a table and your arms pinned down?

It is a sticky issue, but I would imagine that the Chinese have some issues with things that we do from a trade perspective, as well. Bloviating about how everyone is stealing from us really isn't conducive to meaningful discussions.

Talk about crushing the economy. You can't just cut off our supply of cheap labor. You have to legalize the entry of more of them or ignore the problem. Interestingly, Milton Friedman said illegal immigration is the perfect solution, because you need the labor but you don't want the immigrants to have access to the wide array of government benefits.

We spend all this time worrying about how bad the illegal problem is....illegal immigration has been decreasing significantly for like a decade. 16 years ago, when nobody was worrying to death over illegals, the economy was running fine, etc. and we had a whopping 5-10k crossing the border illegally every day. Now we're worried into a frenzy about a caravan of that size. Boomers were so much tougher 16 years ago.

I agree that his tweeting and running his mouth doesn't help, I just think that China, Mexico , the EU would have just laughed if simply asked to renegotiate.

So, you have no problem with Edelbrock spending tons of dollars on research and development on say...….their Air Gap intake manifolds, and the Chinese coming out with a copy soon afterward and undercutting them on price. Or, Callaway or Taylor made developing a new state of the art driver, and having the Chinese have a copy of it within weeks and undercutting them, making it harder for the golf club companies to recoup design and development costs? The consumer ultimately pays for that.
