If you were a CEO and your business "strategy" achieved these kind of results, you'd be shown the door.

But if you're in MAGA world, and you tweet the right things, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

Importers have likely loaded up on their purchases ahead of tariffs going into effect. Trump working on the issue isn't going to have an immediate impact. Plus there's probably a long lead time with much of the purchasing activity. Orders might be fulfilled for many months... even a year of more.

Curious as to what you think of the years from 2005 to 2017...I see the same slope and would offer the POTUS during those years should have been runnoft as well. In fact he told China they are the new world power and the US will not get in the way... so this crap is on your boy Obi-wan. Trump is trying like hell to turn the tables, but keep on hating.... senseless!!!

(1) the premise that trade deficit = bad isn't necessarily true

(2) tariffs have been a bad response to the situation

On the bright side, latest trade talks have achieved this:

A research fellow from George Mason was just on the radio and she said under W's steel tariff, we initially saw an increase in steel creating jobs, but eventually we saw more jobs lost in steel consuming job than even existed in creation jobs.

Can't have the world's only global navy and have your steel industry collapse. If it took tariffs to stop foreign producers from dumping their products in the US then so be it.

The U.S. steel industry was not about to collapse.

In the event of foreign "dumping," there's a WTO remedy.

You haven't been paying attention. Nucor, US Steel, AK... they've all been under pressure as a direct result of China directly targeting the industry by selling for less than the cost of their production. It's a strategic industry. Plants were closing here. Can't build ships and subs during times of conflict if we're dependant on China for the materials. Dems don't get that or they don't care.
