The Future of LV Basketball

We should still be able to have a less than 10 loss season. The future is now for Holly time to win again and anything like the last two seasons is unacceptable.

We haven't had injuries the last two years and we lost 26 games--were seeded 5th and 7th in the SEC that we used to win every year without breaking a sweat. And you call that great? I don't know what games you've been watching, but they haven't been UT's. Saying Warlick has done a "great job" is laughable...She's not even close to a good coach and the program has had one one problem after another. I think old timers like Warlick because she is a longtime Vol and was close to PS. That's not a good reason to keep her as coach. The program has been floundering for years.

I remember the year the Lady Vols got a 2 seed, and Pat told her players it was a slap in the face.

Now they think we should be dancing in the street over a 5 seed? Whatever you all are drinking, I don't want any. I don't even want to smell it.

so your saying that the injuries had nothing to do with it ? think about CHW's time here at UT,how many of them have been injury plagued ?

it isn't an excuse,it is a fact

I think about how many time under "CHW" the "lady vols" have lost games looking confused after doing three stooges like stuff. Different players, different years, different opponents, but the same HC.

The real fact is there has been too much excuse making because it was Pat's choice, and firing Holly while Pat was alive might bother her. I am waiting to see how they justify retaining her now.

Totally agree and she has been given more opportunity than most would get because of the last AD. I know this one is not going to give her much more rope so I expect there will either be performance on the court or we will finally see the Holly experiment over.

If this wasn't Tennessee do you really think she would get fired? Ask yourself that question....She has Win Lost record of 128-46 and she is 12-5 in the NCAA tournament and 8-4 in the SEC tournament with 3 Elite 8 appearances, 1 sweet 16 appearance and one second round exit! Where else would a coach with those stats be fired? Has the last 2 seasons been difficult to stomach yes but could there be a reason why the last 2 seasons were the way they were? Now that she has players who seem to want to buy in to what she is requesting of them lets see how they perform and let her walk at the end of her contract

That is the reason she must be fired if she can't win because we are Tennessee. Of course what she is doing would be great at Ole Miss, Arkansas or 100's of other places. At Tennessee we can never accept anything other than being a top five program. This is what Pat made us and where we hope to stay. Holly was loyal to Pat and stayed with the program for 30 years that is why she is still the coach.
She has to perform close to the level that Pat put this program at and if she can't step aside. I have been on her side more than most but after last season was very concerned that she doesn't have the ability.
So this is the year roster has six five star players even though many are very young and also the top JC center. She should be able to win big with this group.

If she were a man replacing Coach K at Duke, would that be acceptable? Or Boeheim at Syracuse? Or Williams at NC? No!

Wait a minute, she replaced Summitt at Tennessee. That's a much longer shadow. But like I said before, now that Pat is gone? How do you justify not turning the page when things stay the same this season? It's time to stop lowering the bar.

If there's anything good that can come out of this situation, it's that it has to really turn up the heat on Holly Warlick. I honestly think her days are numbered.

This program has been floundering for years--and yet we have people on this board who want to trot out Warlick's half-assed record as some indication of success, as if we were Wright State or Immaculata. We were the top women's program in the country for 15 or so years. We've won 8 national titles. We haven't even BEEN to the Final Four in a DECADE!

If Warlick had succeeded coach K at Duke or Roy William at UNC, she would have been sacked after three years. We will not become a serious player until we get a first-rate coach. Holly should not have gotten the job in the first place--she was not qualified for the job, and let's remember, this is a BIG job--and only got it because she was a dear friend of Summitt's. That's not a qualification for a big coaching job, sorry. It will be nice if there is more team spirit and personal chemistry this year with the bad apples gone, but I also hope this three-year debacle is the catalyst for bringing in a truly excellent coach, which this program DESPERATELY needs.

Ok so should Coach Summitt have been fired based on how the team performed when Candace left? What was the team like from 08 until Holly took over? Were you calling for Pat's Head?

Yes, he was and carried that dissatisfaction over into the Post-Pat era. This has been going on for a long, long time. 99% negative for as long as I remember.

Is that your reason for keeping incompetence?

No it is not but do you work there? Do you know what she was allowed to do and wasn't allowed to do in here interim basis (while Pat was in her early stages and when Holly took over full time) the University could've restricted who she wanted to bring in to help her or anything until a new AD was in place, and they could have also begin to care less of the Womens program and put majority of their resources into the mens program, it is June, Zero games have been played yet but many of you are acting like the season is over. Many of us, including Holly knows she has to get it done or else this year and I am willing to stand by her and allow her to do that and if she can't I will be behind the school to replace her! I want to whats best for the Lady Vols program at the end of the day and I refuse to continue to spread negativity because many of you don't know that you are hurting more than you're helping and then yall complain when we don't land certain recruits forgetting that their parents and other people in their ear read everything posted here

As an outsider mostly looking in, I can see coaches doubling up on Mercedes or Jamie when they have the ball and saying "OK freshmen, beat me". Team building is necessary for every program, but I would have these freshmen shooting a thousand shots a day all summer.

Im sure they all are doing that judging from the midnight sessions Hayes and Davis has posted of them in the gym and Westbrook and her family having a key to the gym where she lives

Difference is that Pat had proven results which at the time were far superior to anyone else in women's basketball. Tennessee to 8 titles, including back to back in 2007 and 2008.

Also, after the rough 2009 season, Tennessee in 2010 and 2011 had fantastic seasons. Both years they had 30+ wins in 3 losses, earned #1 seeds, and won both the SEC regular season/SEC Tournament championships. Then the announcement of Pat's illness came up and it was downhill in 2012 when she took a backseat.

Holly hasn't proven that she can take a team with Final Four talent and lead them to the promised land. She hasn't proven that she can take ownership of the program and get her teams to buy into her system. The results have continued to get worse and worse each year under her, and Tennessee is no longer the class of the SEC. Holly has had some back luck, but she hasn't proven to be successful by Tennessee standards.

A lot better than it is now. Pat never lost 26 games in 2 seasons.

After three years? Ha Ha Ha! That's why you have no credibility! Her won-loss records at that point were 27-8, 29-6, and 30-6. Her accomplishments were one SEC tournament title, two regular season SEC titles, and two Elite Eight appearances. But you say a powerful men's program would have fired her for those results. The only word for that is delusional.

Maybe you need to be a UConn fan? You appear to want our beloved Lady Vols to remain average and not making a Final Four ever again with Holly as coach.

Talk about

a powerful's men's program would have never hired her in the FIRST PLACE. She spent most of her coaching career here as the 2nd assistant, cheerleader for the players. She got this job because she was tight with Summitt--period. Two Elite Eights? Whoop-dee-do: You forget this team has had a LOT of talent--more talent than all but one or two programs in the country, if that. For a program with out talent, getting to the Sweet 16 isn't that hard--or should't be: you beat two major underdogs, often playing at home, and you are in the Sweet 16. We folded completely in our Elite Eight games, by the way.
