I got the ball to spin back today for the first time. 9 iron 135 out, hit pin high and spun back about 5 feet. I have no idea how I did it, but I talked plenty of smack for the rest of the round.

You likely hit the ball in the center of the club and hit the ball before you hit the ground.

While looking for a sand wedge to match my set on ebay I came across a Ping Eye 2 1 iron for sale for like 30 bucks. Think I am going to get it for no other reason than having it in my bag, getting to the first tee, getting it out of my bag like im going to hit it.

This will strike pure fear into my opponent. Follow it up with "hmmm, 320 yards to the fairway bunker into the wind, guess ill just keep it low with this, safer play"

I'm pretty sure that I would develop a sudden rope hook from just looking at the thing.

I'm wondering where my golf game is going to be at when I get back. I had an emergency appendectomy 2 weeks ago and have been in pretty rough shape. I can't roll over in bed-much less think about swinging a club. Has anyone else gotten back into the game after such an injury? I could use some hints, and it looks like I'm going to have about 6 weeks to collect them before doing anything useful.

Better tactic is truly hit much longer clubs on par 3's but cut 'em, choke up and 3/4 'em up there. Guys get all inflated about hitting 2 clubs less than you.

...and you'll be shocked how much less trouble you get in by over clubbing.

Yup. Short iron, well struck, soft ball, receptive green. Backspin is the natural product of the way it is supposed to be done.

For some reason, I believe major surgery might actually help my game.

yeah, the 1 iron would be a joke more than anything.

I was reading up on the sand and lob wedge that go with my clubs (old eye 2s) and they seem pretty good, figured one of them could become a gap for me...now that I actually hit the ball consistently enough to actually gauge my irons. Pretty cool feeling.

The "old" (85-89) Eye2 wedges are the BEST!

That model Ping is still the best club they ever made.

If you can find them in really good shape...get them. The Copper one would be the best bet. I wish to God i did not sell mine 4 yrs ago. got $900 for 2-lw!

I had a set of beryllium ping eye2s from the late '80s. They served me well, but I moved on about 4 years ago. The newer irons have a slightly bigger sweet spot, and off-center hits go a bit straighter and farther. I hit about a half-dozen different models before settling on a set of cavity-back Mizunos, and there was no question; every set performed better than my old pings on shots that were not 100% flushed, and then they performed just as well.

There have not been the technological advances in irons that there have been in drivers, but newer irons for average players are more forgiving than older irons, even if you don't delve into the world of supergameimprovingoffsettennisrackets. If you find the middle of the sweet spot on every swing, and if working the ball 12 degrees left to right instead of 10 is important to you, there might not be much of a difference. For the other 99.8% of us, it is worth looking into a set made in the internet age. JMO.

EDIT: I realize you were speaking directly to wedges, and I agree. There probably isn't any difference in a 20 year old wedge and a new one. For the rest of the iron set, however, I do believe what I posted, and it becomes more and more accurate as the club gets longer.

Idiot! I still got my beryllium's in the closet and will never sell them. Just stopped hitting them 2 yrs ago. Thinking about regripping them and taking them out for a spin

No kidding; I'm thinking of having my arms shortened.

I am currently fighting a slight over the top move, which has evolved over the years from what once was a huge over the top move. I am trying to get my hands about two inches further inside at impact. Two inches--approximately this far:

<------------------>

And it is hard. Very hard. And frustrating. Sometimes golf sucks.

It's the small adjustments that are the most frustrating.

Holy crap, did I ever play like he'll today.

Been playing well and today just but me. Drove it well, but couldn't hit an iron in the same area code and my putting just left me.

Something up with my shoulder setup really messed with my grip feel. Shanked one from 112 on a 450 yd par 4. Another from 195 on a 530 par five. Highly uncomfortable over it and now just pissed.

Hit about 100 balls when done and ironed some of it out, but actually sweat through my shoes.

Shanks are actually near perfect hits. A couple weeks ago I was playing Los serranos in ca the longest course in ca par 74 had to par 18 for a 79 and shanked my approach and double bogeyed. Very disappointing

NO...they are not "near perfect hits".
Not even close! Everyone has done it, but ......not close to a good shot.
