The Golf Thread

I'm around 285-295.

I can roll one passed 300 on occasion. But it doesn't happen much.

Try hitting a TopFlite Freak and you'll roll them past 300 on more occasions. That ball is stupid long.

You should never play a ball that has an adverb or adjective in it's name. And I know "Freak" is a noun, but I choose to grandfather it into my rule.

I believe part of my bad driving stemmed from scrambles. After my daughter was born the only rounds I played were when some buddies called for me to play in a scramble.
When you hit 4th and you've got one in the fairway, you've got the other 3 saying "we got one out there for you, now really go at it."

I hate scrambles.

. . . and the worst is when you end up in a group where they act like they just scored a TD every time a birdie putt rolls in.

I don't even try to do anything other than have a good time in those things. There is a special place in hell for people that lie about their handicaps and then shoot -18 in a charity scramble.

The best scramble ever is the Cool Beans tournament at the Wee Course at Williams Creek. All the booze you can drink with scantily clad chick servers and the average score is +4

The best one I've ever played in is the Meat Tournament in Wrightsville, GA on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. You play 18 holes. Come in and eat a turkey dinner. Then they randomly draw out 6 holes that they don't count and flight the tournament based on the other 12 holes. Then they send you back out to play 6 more holes to finish up the tournament.

The winners are paid in various cuts of meat and various alcoholic selections and a good time is had by all.

I enjoy River Islands but I may be done with that course. New ownership is charging @ $60 on weekends. Yea right! Not for a course that's in the middle of nowhere.
Willow Creek is too convenient for that $$$. I'll probably try the Rarity courses, never played a single one.

IMHO, from a design standpoint, River Islands is as good as any course in a 50-mile radius of Knoxville, plus it's just flat-out gorgeous, especially the front nine - great blend of water and grass and sky. I haven't played it since the ownership changed hands, but the maintenance and upkeep had definitely gone downhill in the last several years, which is a shame. Arthur Hills design, and I daresay it's a stern test for just about anyone from the tips. Hell, it's a stern test from the whites. It's still on GolfNow, and you can still get on for $40 on weekends.

My buddies prefer to call it "p*s*y" but pure sounds good to me. I don't want to make the investment to new irons quite yet so I'm going to go get my driver reshafted tommorow. Get my swing speed examined, etc and then decide on what is best for me. Also going to try some of the low compression Precept Laddie golf balls.

as far as low compression goes, in my experience, Titleist DT Solo > Maxfli Noodle > Precept Laddie.

I'm playing RI tomorrow for $30 off of golfnow.

From a beauty standpoint I agree about River Islands. In terms of condition it's not any better than a few courses closer to Knoxville.

I'm a fan and it is definitely a challenge from the tips. As more of these courses intended to be private become public, there's going to be some good golf to be had around here.

Heat inex is about 106 down here right now and climbing toward 115. It might as well be the dead of winter. You just can't play when the heat index gets this high.

Bad here in N. Utah, too. Humidity is almost always so low that a person CAN play in the middle of the day. Not this week (since Tuesday)....humidity is only somewhere in the 40's...but what a difference. Just way too hot.

I thought about maybe doing some yardwork a few minutes ago. Checked the heat index and it was still 103 at 7:30.
