Understand.Exaggerating on the distance of course, but people don't hit the ball flush and expect the club to perform as advertised and its not going to happen. It's almost impossible to fit some people to clubs due to how bad their swings are.

My dad firmly believes that as driver technology has progressed, ball technology has regressed.
But core materials softening dramatically and the ability to make layers that reduce spin from flat clubs but increase from wedges has made a gigantic difference.Not really. The primary factor is weight. The ball's weight has remained constant so the technology has to be focused on spin and drag.
Also, the ball's diameter has remained constant. Not as significant as weight but more significant than spin or drag.
