Phil's game is looking good. Still not hitting any fairways, but does he ever?

Agreed. A majority of the courses they play on Tour still don't penalize players for missing fairways. The players are just too good these days.

The USGA thought they were fixing this problem when they brought in the new groove rule, but with technology these days the manufactures and players just found other ways. From what I've heard the new spinner shafts the players are using are spinning the ball even more.

Help me understand. Presumably you're talking about iron shafts, which would be like a project x or something, no?

Correct on the iron shafts. Would I compare them to project x's, no. I'm not sure what companies make them but I do know True Temper has one out. They look very similar to a stock iron shaft but they do have a "recessed" area along the shaft (below the grip) that is supposed to help increase your spin rate.

I've seen the stick, I just don't get how it matters from the rough.

BTW, there have been several previous versions of same idea.

I'll buy the data about generating more RPMs from a decent lie, but I don't get the part about it helping from heavy rough. I would think that any launch angle or spin help gets negated from the hay. The whole thing is stupid though. I'll never understand why the USGA is going after clubs instead of just cooling off the ball.

You're right the "spinner shafts" have been out for some time, but I think with the new grooves rule the players have seen a spike in the technology.

I understand what you're saying as far as hitting from the rough. But you and I both know the players on tour are light years ahead of the average golfer. On most courses I think the players don't care where they hit it. They aren't intimidated by the "rough" on some of the courses they play. Of course they're going to get the occasional bad lie in the rough but for the most part the courses are in too good of shape for them to worry about things like that. I've been lucky enough to play with a couple tour pro's and I've seen it first hand.

A lot of it also has to do with where they are playing in the early part of the season - places where bomb and gouge is an OK strategy.

And that's the bottom line. They keep building balls that go just a hair further and spin a little more. The cumulative effect has been enormous.

Now that all the shaft / head / ball optimization is out there and guys can fly it 320, it's probably time to tone that back.

I'm a perfect example. I barely qualify as a weekend golfer anymore and probably see the practice tee about 5 times a year, yet I still hit it as far with the irons and a lot farther with the Driver than I did when I was in college and gave a damn. A friend of mine was saying the other day that the thing people our age have really missed out on is hitting it past old people because none of the old guys have lost any distance in 10 years.

Agreed.

Mickelson stuffs one on 17 about to close to within 1. Watson and Vegas on the 18th fairway. This is going to be a good finish.

I think Watson may be in worse shape than Vegas . . . and Vegas is taking a penalty shot.

As pristine as bunkers are kept on tour they are never really a penalty. He'll probably stick this one close too.

It's not as bad as they made it out to be . I thought he had plugged it on the downslope.
