The Golf Thread

As far as a driver swing is concerned, I don't think it will matter. Many people actually swing their driver better after a lay off. Plus, you don't want to be fitted for your very best swings. You want to be fitted for your "normal" swings. JMO.

I probably should rephrase. It's not that I want to be swinging great as much as I don't want to be swinging badly.

You might be right about the Driver though. That's definitely the easiest club for me to pick back up after a layoff.

It depends on your skill level too. If you're a 20 handicap then launch monitors & getting custom fit should take a backseat to some lessons. Well at least the launch monitor part. Custom fit is a personal choice because most places will let you hit just about any club they have until you find what you like. If you make one decent swing on a launch monitor out of 10 what good does it really do. If you're good enough to be custom fit on a launch monitor then every swing you make should have input on the customization.

It certainly does. I almost included a point about handicap, but I figued this guy was pretty decent given his club type choices and he did mention something about blades.

Has anybody ever had a case of the shanks?

2 weeks ago I shot a 74, I usually shoot in the mid to upper 70's, but last Sunday the shanks came back to haunt me and destroyed what confidence I had. The only shot types this happens on is between 30-80 yards. Any drills or swing thoughts to rid me of this evil word?

Aim a good bit right of target of target but still try to hit your target. Or set up with the ball on the heel, I know that sounds weird but it works.

No matter what I do the contact is always about an 1/8" from the hosel, I couldn't hit it out on the toe to save my life. Now a full shot it's no problem because I can fire the hips thru aggresively and that itself takes the hosel out of the way. It's just those damn intermediate shots

Maybe using too much wrist/arm and not enough shoulder turn? I used to run into them more, but haven't in awhile. My personal issue was all arms, deceleration and a lack of follow thru, which had my face open a tad and my hands out of position. I found that if I focused on my shoulder turn, even for little punch shots, it took care of both problems for me.

You could try setting up with your hips & stance open but that could make it worse. I have a friend who hits a beautiful high draw but when he gets a wedge in his hand from 100 in his swing completely changes. He takes the club back fine & the he just stabs at the ball laying the sod over a lot of them. Point is your full swing shouldn't be that much different than your short game swing for the most part. Take a couple of full swings on your next short shot then look at the target & take 1 practice swing to gauge distance & fire. Make sure the back swing & follow through match.

Obviously I've never seen your swing, but that swing thought seems pretty dangerous to me. The hosel shouldn't be in a position to get taken out of the way by anything. The only way this happens is if you are coming over the top and crossing the line like a mad man.

I have poor rotation on the intermediate (30-80 yds) shots which introduces the hosel to the ball. Club face open @ impact

I wouldn't blame shanks on an open face or poor rotation. Sounds more like your plane at address isn't the same as impact. Your lower body shouldn't be doing that much anyway on a 30 yard shot.

To shank it you have to either be coming into the ball from too far inside and trying to flip your hands at it to catch up or coming over the top too steep.

Just stay relaxed, keep the club in front of your belt buckle and accelerate. No thinking about rotation required.

Very few golfers haven't experienced the shanks. In fact, most great players have hit them or had cases of them at some point in their careers. There are so many reasons why you can shank that it is imperative to identify it so you can apply the proper fix. Lots of ways to fix it too, but the fix must match the cause. Often times for the low handicappers, it can be a simple case of lifting the head too quick, taking your eye off the ball or deceleration on the downswing simply because most good players will stand a little closer to the ball and hit their shots closer to the hosel.

Played my first round of 18 in a long, long, long time today. Only my second round in 6 or 7 months. 18 holes, 18 over. Started out with a triple on 1 and a double on 2.

I love golf.(sarcasm)

Got to go to Baton Rouge this weekend (assuming it's not washed away). Anybody know of any not great but good courses there for a guy to try? Going to have a lot of free time on Saturday.

Playing the Bay Point Marriott Meadows course at the moment. Nice little track.
