The Golf Thread

I understand what you are saying, and you are correct. However, I like hitting driver. I like thinking that two good shots in a row put me up around the green on 5s in 2. I like aiming for the 14 yd strip between the bunkers on our drivable par 4 9th. And I do put more doubles and triples and snowmen on the card than I should. I try not to be completely stupid with my aggressiveness, but for me, in a typical round, it is the way I like to play so I play it. I look for a reason to bring out the big stick rather than a reason to leave it in the bag, and the times I am hitting it well more than make up for the lost strokes on my card when I am not when it comes to enjoyability of the round.

I won't for a moment argue that it is the optimum way to consistently shoot my best score for 18, but I can't imagine any circumstance that would inspire me to hit 7i-7i into #9 rather than blast a drive while murmuring a short prayer.

Your style is perfect for a buck a hole, with carryovers, in a foursome. You watch while two guys bogey three holes and you swoop in to take it all down when your driver-prayer combo gets answered!

And it is more fun, which is why I play anyway. At least it is more fun until it isn't, which does happen sometimes when you are slowing down play looking for balls and fighting off snakes when taking your stance. Actually, come to think of it, that is kind of fun...

Well, I finally got out on the course yesterday. I hit a small bag on the range and felt pretty good, so I played seven holes. I'm pretty stiff in the elbow today, but overall things went well. I think that about Tuesday I'll be ready for round two. For those interested, I shot 8 over for 7, which considering that I was thinking, "I wonder if a long iron will cause discomfort," rather than regular good old golf thoughts, made me fairly happy. I also seem to have picked up some length, both with my irons and especially with the driver I bought this winter. I can't really explain it, but long is good, although it did make me misclub a couple of times.

can I get some feedback on the new Cobra X speed Pro D. looks like a very good club

Is that the "red" version? My girlfriend plays it (she is a 4 handicap who has always played a men's driver,) and I hit it a couple of times yesterday. It was as long as my Cleveland Launcher with higher trajectory and more carry, and possibly a little straighter. She has picked up more distance since switching to it as well, but her old driver was over 8 years old, so that's not surprising. The shape and size are confidence inspiring, and the results were very good. The only negative I saw was the sound--it sounds like you are hitting the ball with an empty coffee can. If you can stand that, I would give it two thumbs up.

Played Burnt Pine at Sandestin today.

I should stick to just eating good food, and drinking beer when I'm here.

I was in scramble yesterday with throws, string, skirts, mulligans, and poker hands. After playing the round at -18 with myself another B player and two relative beginners, I am wondering why in the world they even bothered going to a golf course for the event. I must admit the low number was fun, but we actually tossed the ball into a hole for an eagle. It just didn't feel right. At least the charity is a very good cause.

It's actually the gold version with X Pro D on the bottom. has a very deep face to do away with some of the girth from the setup view.

Alright Cotton. Good to hear. Now get your hind end to Lex so we can tee it up. I look forward to meeting your ringer.

Lex, I remember you bringing up Olde Stone early early early in this thread. I played that course Friday and it was the toughest golf course I have ever played in my entire life. Of course, they had the rough as high as they could get it (it hadn't been cut in a week) because of a tournament they just had. I was just happy I kept it under 100. Extremely beautiful course though. If you ever do get on, spend 10 minutes reading each green. You have no idea what happens until you actually hit the ball there.

Played Olde South at Hilton Head today. Threw it in the cup from a greenside waste area for Eagle on 18.

Nice way to finish. I'm playing this week in a SC development called The Reserve (great Nicklaus designed private course) and have yet to find any putting touch, but there's always tomorrow (at 6:55 in fact)

I'll do my best. My goal right now is to get comfortable enough to book that trip to Kohler (the one I bought in the charity auction.) Said ringer will be traveling with me, but she's always good for a trip to Lexington, too. She went to undergrad there, and still has a slew of friends in Fayette county. Be warned, though, that she plays the irrating, non-flashy style of golf that makes you look look up after 14 holes and say, "Damn, you're one over, aren't you?"

On a related note, they just announced the format for the ladies club championship at our home club. It is match play again, spread over three weeks. Since she has won it the only three times she has entered, holds down a full-time job, is the youngest member of the LGA by 15 years, and would beat the field by double digits in a 2 day stroke play event like the men's, it seems very likely that the format was developed specifically to give the field the best chance to beat her. They actually wanted to roll the ball, but the pro stopped that nonsense.

It could be worse, I suppose. Her only real competition would be the 18 year old daughter of one of the members, who is very good. Last year, they didn't allow anyone under 18 to play. This year, they are running the tournament into the start of college so she won't be available. Old women are tricky.

The "girth" actually didn't bother me; strangely enough, I liked the size. I couldn't figure out, though, how that 460cc driver was so much bigger than my 460cc driver.

The sound is really, really weird.

you are going to absolutely love Kohler (assuming it's a golf trip). Some absolutely amazing golf packed into a very small area. Whistling Straits is one of the best I've ever played, but it is not for the faint of heart.

It is a golf trip--I bought a 3 day, 4 night package for the American Club at an annual auction for a local school. I bought one to Pinehurst last year, so it kind of became my annual participation in the fundraiser. I'm looking forward to it.

I've played both the River and Meadow course at Black Wolf Run, I haven't been fortuante enough to play Whistling Straights but the few people I know that have played raved about it.

Good Luck

went back to the range yesterday. the blister problem is now non existant. we have a family friend who is a local pro, and while he didn't watch me swing, he suggested i not hold the club so tight and not swing so hard. seemed like logical advice to me. i was really blasting the ball and it felt good. a few more trips and i'll be ready to get on the course.

the set of clubs that gave me trouble were King Cobra II OS irons with graphitte shafts. bought them used (3-G) for $150. seemed like a good deal to me. yea or nay?

be very wary anyone who definitively answers this question without seeing you swing with the clubs. they were likely worth the money, but only to the extent that they work for your setup and swing. otherwise they're worth exactly jack to you.

Thanks--I'll probably book the trip in the next couple of weeks for sometime mid-to-late August.

River Course at Blackwolf and Whistling Straits are the two to play, although everything there is very, very good. I don't remember playing anything there that wasn't difficult. Rough was up quite a bit though. I assume they still keep it that way, but it's getting harder to do at resorts.

They sure didn't have a problem keeping high rough at the place I played on Tuesday. :mf_surrender:

where was that?

I played for the week at the Reserve in SC, and the rough was every bit as playable as the fairways. As you might imagine, I hit far more drivers than I'm accustomed to hitting.
